Playing games in your head with words/numbers that you see

That's the best way i can explain it, anyway. I hope someone else out there does this, so that this doesn't seem crazy... because it really serves no purpose at all. Anyway, i've always had this habit with words, sentences, and sometimes numbers. I'll look at a word or group of words and count the letters, divide the word in half and find the middle letters, divide a sentence in half, and things like that in my head.. for no reason really. Let's just use the title of this section "General Autism Discussion" as an example. I'd look at the word "general" and think... seven letters, "e" is the middle letter. Autism... six letters, "ti" are middle letters.. "Discussion"... ten letters, "us" are middle letters... With the whole sentence, three words... "autism" is the middle word.... I especially do this a lot with titles of things. It's usually when i'm looking at a word, but sometimes i'll just picture a word i hear in my head and do this. Anyone else have any similar pointless mental things you do with numbers or words?

You I tend to do that I try to rearrange letters or convert them into numbers or numbers to letters to find some hidden meaning in them but most of the time its out of fun or habit.

Oh, and i forgot to mention that i also like to read words backwards.

Absolutely. I manipulate pieces of words, numbers, strings of data, etc in my head all the time and have for as long as I can remember. It is fun.

I do this too - more with numbers than with words, although I do actually know which number each letter of the alphabet is (don't know how I know this - I never actually tried to learn it, but to me the fact that O is 15 is as simple a piece of information as the fact it lies between N and P in the alphabet).

Yes, and I believe doing these kinds of things is part of learning to see what is actually behind everything!

With words. I play with their meanings or root words in my head and see how they kind of look or sound like something else, to find synophones or synonyms and make more words and sentences with these. I do this in conversation, too, which tends to make them confusing.

I don't do that specifically, but I totally understand..
Sometimes I do that kind of thing with shapes, like patterns in the beams and windows on the side of a building, (or piano keyboards, milk crates, etc..) counting to the middle, dividing up the beams into their individual parts, finding the smaller patterns inside the bigger patterns... stuff like that.

Also I agree with leejosepho. :3 It's kind of a learning thing but often it seems kind of useless.. like a misdirected effort to learn..

I am a menace when driving, because I have a game I play with numbers and letters on license plates, signs, etc. (which means I am looking at license plates, signs, house numbers, etc., instead of paying attention to the road!)

I play this word game where I take an English word and think about how a Japanese person would pronounce it. Sometimes I even say the word silently to myself in a Japanese accent!

It'd be much more of a productive learning exercise if I actually memorized the translations of the words rather than how they would be pronounced in an Asian accent.

I am constantly looking for patterns or connections to the numbers I come in contact with. I simply cannot leave a number be. Like 1729. Did you knew this is the least integer that can be written as the sum of cubes in two different ways?

I look at license plate numbers. Which, in my state, is numbers and letters. I recognized one today as being "29 off" of my current car plate, and another one yesterday as being "30 off." (Yeah, they were off in the same direction. So I saw consecutive plate numbers on consecutive days. And the odds of that are....... ?) My brain tries to make the numbers (especially the numbers) into things. It's not an obsession, it's just something that happens.
