Controversial special interests?

How do you we about controversial special interests. Should they be taken away or maybe kept but teach the person with that special interest why that topic should not be talked about outside of the closet confidantes.

I know someone who liked weapons a lot. He talked about them in school, and even searched for them on the school internet.

Luckily it's mostly gone now.

Well I love to study phobias and the some what opposite of them.

I remember when I first started here, when Austin Powers was my special interest. That's a pretty raunchy interest to have. I don't really care much for his movies, these days. I just got rid of that interest, three years ago. There are better things to be interested in, than an oversexed movie, that's rated PG 14.

I like lock picking and bypassing security systems.

Well I don't really have any controversial obsessions. I am currently obsessed with Doctor Who and IT and even though I'm constantly trying to find ways to bypass security, DRM and other things just to experiment...I don't think it's that much of an issue.

I am always obsessed with guitar but I have shifting side-obsessions...

I have a special interest in invertebrates at the moment.

I realise this isn't super controversial, but most people find them too creepy XD.

Does Marxism count as a controversial interest? Everything else I do seems to be fairly middle-of-the-road and unlikely to scare anybody.

Unusual interests topic

Some of my more "interesting" interests are morbid anatomy of unusually formed humans, cannibalism, mummification, serial killers and forensic pathology.

I don't know about anyone else but I learned not to talk about my interest (slash fanfiction and other homoerotic texts) not because someone taught me not to but because no one would ever reply.

It's not something that I feel is actually all that controversial. Lots of people enjoy this so I don't quite understand why it makes people uncomfortable when mentioned just that it does.

The thing about having special interests (and have it/them be a "thing" in a way most people don't seem to have them) is that it can be and often is all consuming.

To then have someone try to limit it or ignore it because they don't understand or approve? Kind of sucks, a lot.

No matter how odd or useless the interest might seem at first....

I guess I can only speak for myself here but I don't spend hour after hour after hour on something I don't enjoy or on something that doesn't give me any sense of satisfaction at all.

Does anyone do that?

So as long as it's not actively hurting anyone. Why take it away?

And if it's truly controversial I think the person talking about it in public will eventually get the idea. Being socially inept (or whatever you want to call it) isn't actually the same as stupid, no?

Though I guess having someone try to explain why no one is reacting well to your enthusiasm couldn't hurt and might save that person some confusion :)

I've always had a fascination with surveillance systems/spy cameras. It was more so when I was young. I remember begging my dad to explain to me how to make one, but he thought that I would be too young to understand the mechanism behind it. He stiill underestimates my abilities, and it's a pity because he could have taught me so much. I'm beginning to doubt whether he knows as much as he claims to know...

Anyway, I've always dreamt of planting a spy camera in someone's apartment and watching them from my home. I think this is primarily because I've always yearned to learn more about people, and seeked out new ways to identify with them. I've also wanted to eavesdrop on my friends to find out whether they were lying or not about certain things. I've stalked people a lot when I was younger, and still have a little bit of an inclination to do so now. Of course, people would think that my motive behind the stalking is something very obscure and strange. But it's not...

To me a controversial special interest would be like if you were obsessed with National Socialism. Not that I have ever been obsessed with that lol.

I was interested in serial killers and did do research papers on them LOL! I could even think of evil ways to hurt people. I imagined (fictionaly!) writing a book on all the ways to do bad terrorist things LOL!! !! !! !! (My family hated it ROFL!)
