Is bordem more common in those with Aspergers/ASD than NTs?

Hi,

It was just passing my mind that I tend to have a very low threshold of bordem and unless I am doing something productive (like being on the computer, being in work, travelling around or going out walking etc.) I can sometimes get very bored very quickly it has not been as bad as it used to be about 5 years ago but I do have a very low threshold when it comes to getting bored and in the past I before I was working and occupied I noticed that sometimes my bordem could sometimes lead to a degree of anxeity or depression. My best friend who also has Asperger's also gets board easily and travels around on public transport alot (like me he does not seem to cope well with being the house for long periods of time just like me) but can be more socially isolated than me so maybe that is also why he gets board so easily so I am just wondering if bordem is more common in those with AS than NT and can also bordem be more chronic in those on the autistic spectrum than NTs?

I think it's more common in NTs. I rarely get bored, especially when I'm by myself. The only time I feel bored is when someone keeps talking about something that isn't part of my special interest.

My first reaction was " No I don't get bored easily, I find things that bore other people entirely engaging. But I see what you're saying, I have to have something to engage me, and even though I do thing that would bore other people to insanity (like camping alone for weeks) I am always engaged in something. I survive social functions by finding something to focus on. I've never really understood the concept of relaxing. What interest is there in doing that?

I am never bored because I don't find just sitting and thinking to be boring. I am the center of my own private universe after all.

I get bored when made to do boring things like at work. I think I need to be creating stuff, and when I have a hard time with that, or I get stuck in some mental state, I get uber bored. If I was doing what I love 24/7, I would never sleep, but as it is, I am bored most of the time.

Same here. I always have something to think about. There was another thread talking about people's fantasy life. I don't have fantasies per se but I always have a running story in my mind, in which I am not a character. It's more like a movie that I make up as I go along. I don't really understand boredom because it doesn't really happen to me.

I can feel restless, like if I'm on a long bus ride and I feel like getting to where I'm going. Or I could be bored if I had to do a tedious task that was too engaging for me to be able to think about my own stuff but not engaging enough to be interesting in itself, but since I don't have a job I'm rarely in that position.

I could be alone in my backyard all day sitting in the grass watching the trees move in the wind and not get bored. I just think about everything and become immersed in thought and memory. I rarely get bored.

As long as I still got my highly imaginative mind I'm good. And music. I could even live without computers, in fact, I'd probably get more done, creativity wise. It would take some adjustment though, but I got on long before they became popular.



This can apply at times. I find it easier to listen now though than when I was younger. But not for stuff I hear over and over, like with my SO when he goes on and on about work. I'm not one for talking about work. But he keeps expecting me to know who he's talking about, and I often don't. Even if I could place a face on a name, I still wouldn't care because none of them mean anything to me. So yeah, boring.

I can get bored if I'm with other people or if there's something tedius that I have to do. I rarely get bored if I'm alone and left to my own devices. I can always come up with something to do or just listen to music while being in my own little fantasy world.

Some of the responses were funny/right on. I too could just sit in the back yard and do nothing and be perfectly content. Other times I can always find something to do. Between just listening to music, reading, anything. It's usually I don't have enough time to enjoy the things I like with a house full of kids to contend with, but never boring.

I can always find something to entertain myself if left to my own devices. But when forced to participate in what someone else considers amusing, I can become excruciatingly bored in no time - its almost like being imprisoned.

I worked in a Tattoo shop a couple of years ago whose business was exclusively walk-ins and often hours could go by when no customers came in, but we couldn't leave lest we miss some business. The waiting in itself wouldn't have been so bad, but the owners had this large television in the lobby that was always LOUD and always playing either a Jeff Dunham puppet show DvD, or a monster truck rally (they were hillbillies who couldn't wrap their tiny brains around anything more challenging). That's the kind of boredom that leads one to self-harming behaviors.

I hardly ever get bored. When I do, I know that it is the onset of a form of depression. When depressed I can't enjoy things. But usually, I can find lots to occupy myself with. There are always new obsessions waiting to be discovered...

It's probably not an AS thing since it seems like a lot of aspies can't relate to it.

I'm intensely jealous of people who never get bored. My life would be so much easier if I never got bored. Then again, I probably wouldn't post here so often if I never got bored.
