Today i met a therapist the session lasted for 15 minutes
she walked in 15 minutes late and continued talking on the phone
again while we were in session she had a call and was talking on it.
she spoke to me for 15 minutes and asked me to purchase her book
which will help me
she said i need to come back next week and testing wont be needed.
just some one to one interaction is enough
i felt she gave very less time....so much time is usually given by psychiatrist
i had taken a leave from office, travelled half way around the town, waited for 45 minutes
and finally she spoke to me for 15 minutes...
is that all the time a psychotherapist spends with their patient.

Well, she doesn't sound like a decent therapist. I've been in therapy sessions where the phone was ringing and my therapists ignored it and continued with the session. And it sounds as if she's more concerned about you purchasing her book. . . By the way my sessions usually last for about 20 - 30 minutes. But I think it depends on the therapist, so if you feel you're not getting enough time spent one to one I suggest you get a better therapist.

Does sound like she wants to suck money out of you. Maybe she thinks your gullible. ( If I wanted a self help book, I would of went to a book shop :/ ) or go "oh if I am buying your book, then why do I need sessions, you said it would help me" 8) .

hmm....if she had prescribed one more book of other author alongwith her book then she might have sounded genuine
but she prescribed only her book saying thats the one which will help me.... 8O

I would not be going back.

I recently left the psychiatrist I have been seeing because she won't listen

Sounds like you got a Dr Phil on your hands. They talk to you in sound bytes and then push books or DVD's or classes on you. That's not a real therapist. That's a media therapist. I'm sorry that the first one you found wasn't good. They aren't all like that. Keep calling around. Make your first appointment for a meeting with the therapist rather than a session. That way it's cheaper and you don't have to stay for the whole fifty minutes. Bring a list of you that has your problems and what you want to accomplish. Show that to her and ask if she believes she can help you accomplish them. Tell her that you recently had a bad experience and want to know up front if you will be expected to buy a book, classes, DVD's etc. If she says she can help you and without those things, ask her how she plans on helping you. What is her treatment plan for you. Tell her that you would like to go over your progress with her periodically as well as any revisions in the treatment plan.

If you go in like that, and talk to her like you are hiring someone to help you fix something, (which you are!) then she will give you more attention and respect because she knows that you have specific goals and want to work on them and want to follow the progress of it, rather than just come in and complain that it's not working for most of the hour, or talk randomly about things.

Good luck!

Any therapist that takes a call while in session with a patient should be fired (IOW, you should fire her by never going to her again.) Personally, I would even refuse to pay the bill, instead answering a bill with a letter explaining her lack of professionalism. NO therapist I have EVER seen has EVER taken a call while in session with me. In point of fact, those whose phones have rung while I was there, have silenced them or called the receptionist to say, "I'm in session, don't call me." The only exception ever was an emergency call, and that appointment was never charged to me.

To top it off, she tried to sell you her book?! That's just plain outrageous.

If it were me, I would find somebody else and refuse to pay the bill. Paying for service you never received is ridiculous.

thats wonderful guidance
well in middle of the session she was talking to her driver asking him to bring the car at so and so place.
then she didnt even apologise for coming half an hour late
top it all she walked in talking on the phone while we waited for her to finish her call.
she was ridiculously unprofessional.
if i am confident and know what i want then they will respect me and give it to me rather then just rumbling something.
actually i want to try cognitive behaviour theraphy

we had to pay the bill before the session she was really unprofessional.
i told my hubby but he is a idiot
he wont ever standup and speak up
all this nonsense kept on happening i was quite shocked when she just abruptly winded up the session after 15mins of meeting.

I will respectfully disagree. I have had several very good psychs that listened to their patients... A doctor has to listen to their patience or nothing gets taken care of.

It may be different in India than the US or other places. I'm sure every place is different somewhat.

Thirty years ago, most psychiatrists where I live, did therapy and prescribed drugs. Some larger practices had psychologists but not all of them. They saw patients that the docs sent them. I believe they sent them certain type cases and ones that didn't require meds.

Twenty years ago, about half did therapy and the other half managed meds and followed cases and made referrals and did hospital rounds.

Ten years ago up to today, you'd be hard pressed to find an MD around here who will do actual therapy with you. You might talk to one for a few minutes while he's rounding if you are inpatient. Otherwise you see him for about ten minutes every so often at office visits and the rest of the time you just go directly to the psychologist or LBSW who also do therapy around here.

Nowdays, it's harder to find even psychologists around here, that's been taken over by LBSW's.

Whats the normal way to do therapy in India? Who do you normally see, and do you have to get referrals, etc?

as a child i went to a psychatrist who just prescribed medicine and asked my mom to get me psychotheraphy also..for which we visited other doctor.
now recently i visited a psychiatrist she didnt ask me anything not even my full background, family history she just prescribed me anti depressant when i was asking her to let me go ahead with the psychotherapist in her hospital she said i need 3 months of medicines and probably i would need to continue the medicine for 2 years....i just dropped her
i visited a therapist who specialises in autistic children but she did a short review and told me i should meet a counsellor who can help me
now i visited a psychotherapist who i mentioned took a session of 15 minutes....so u see they all fool us

Selling a book while giving therapy is probably a conflict of interest.
