Finally saw this movie the other day. Never read the book before, but dang, I'm quite certain the title character is on the spectrum (or very close to it).

As if his obsession with birds wasn't enough (and the stereotypical "weirdo" who's completely socially absent-minded), there were a lot of scenes where I felt I could relate to him a little too well...the scene where he's pacing and Al yells at him to stop, and especially the scene where he's fighting to try to get his car back, just because it belongs to him. I don't want to spoil too much, but the whole "I'm so upset that I don't want anything else." part was me to a T.

He had a few other traits, like being asexual (which obviously doesn't apply to everyone), Idunno, it was just a really cool movie. A bit sad at parts, but with a really satisfying (IMO) ending.

I do not fully understand this, it is too ambiguous.
I can say different ways of interpreting it and you will tell me which is right so I can know;

1. It upsets me that I do not like change
2. It upsets me that something is changing
3. I like being upset

"Birdy", directed by Alan Parker, is a story of friendship between Al (Nicholas Cage) and Birdy (Matthew Modine), two Philadelphia, Pa high schoolers who end up being sent to Vietnam."

I read the whole review on IMDB, but don't want to post it here. Looks good though, I think I'll see it when I get a chance.

I agree that I think he is on the spectrum, either that or he has some kind of personality disorder but his bird obsession points more towards an ASD of some sort. The first time I saw that movie I just had to laugh because in so many ways he reminded me of myself - without the hospital stay, that is.

Eh, it was kind of left ambiguous so that I wouldn't give away too much of the movie.

It's just kind of a thing that happens to me...like the other day, I was making pancakes. I ruined them real bad, which kind of upset me...then to make matters worse, I went to make some more, and we ran out of batter mix...so by this point, I was so upset that I didn't even want to eat anymore. I just wanted to scream and throw the pan across the room, but I controlled myself (is this what others refer to as a meltdown?).

This makes sense to me.
This is probably how meltdowns are different from tantrums, in that, even if the goal is reached, the extreme emotion is still there and the person will not immediately calm down, even when this happens.
Although there might be something the person does to calm down (excessive rocking) but this is usually not the same thing as what is wanted.
