Ive noticed that a lot of people with autism have posted about emotional problems, especially anxiety. I always thought that autism made me less emotional. The only things i can ever identify feeling is relaxed, irritated, confused and apathetic/neutral. I actually get extremely irritated when other people cry or become anxious and I always make them worse by yelling and being insensitive. Then i just get more irritated. Ive wondered why im so intollerant with people expressing these feelings. Its just that i get annoyed so easily when people act that way. I think its because it disturbs my sense of peace and makes me unrelaxed because i feel burdened by them being around. Do other autistic people get annoyed by other peoples emotional expressions or just me?

I don't get irritated at the person, I'm mostly irritated with my inability to know what to do to make the person feel better. I have a knack for over intellectualizing everything and that doesn't go over well when a person needs comforting.

But I think my frustration or irritation might be misunderstood as being directed at the person when it's not. I usually just stick with "I'm sorry" and hand them a napkin or Kleenex. :(

On the internet though, I can think out what I want to say before I say it and I might be able to come up with a more appropriate comment for a person in need.

I myself am not an emotional person but I do have anxiety and it's nothing to be played with. It can lead to deep depression and you'll have thoughts about killing yourself all the time Luckily I got some help before I got my hands on a gun. It's a very serious thing and if other aspies come up here to release their feelings and get answers because in the real world they don't open up to people well that's fine with me.

It doesnt bother me whatsoever on the internet. Just in real life. I do realize that it is my problem that i get annoyed so easily. Maybe its my own way of not being able to deal with intence situations is not being able to tollerate other people being intence. Im actually being sent to a neurologist next week for an eeg. The doctor susspects I have some type of epilepsy where I have had untreated seizures all my life without knowing it, thats caused permenant brain damage making me unable to feel much of anything and also have psychotic, cognative, and severe narcolespy symptoms. Im not trying to be a prick or put other people down. i was just discussing my annoyence because it causes me a lot of issues in interpersonal relationships.

I'm a bit like this. Personally I only tend to feel anxiety, or not anxiety. Everything else is a bit fuzzy and weak. I don't mind other people emotioning off so much these days, as I know now that people go crazy over things that aren't usually threatening to me. I just patiently let them get on with it, try and look and sound like I understand their feeling, and don't allow myself to get sucked into feeling anxious about it.

M_p_furo: Trying to actively do something about someone's emotional display seems to be the worst thing, in my experience. What they really want is understanding, sympathy. A good thing to do is to ask them questions about how they feel and why, it seems to indicate that you care, and may give you an insight into how people work.

I just thought that you were wondering if anyone could relate to you. It's hard to know you are doing something but not really know why or how to deal with it. I hope the doctor can give you some answers......though I hope it's nothing serious.

I get uncomfortable when people cry or get angry too. Not really annoyed, but there's nothing I can do for them. I cannot express my feelings. I have sometimes told people to 'chill' when they get angry because it's disturbing me and I don't understand what made them so angry. Usually they are going on about somebody at work or telling me to be more tolerant when I try to correct them (which automatically happens and I stop it when it's too late).

There are a lot of reasons I'm bothered by emotions. They are intense, irrational, skew a person's perception of a situation when talking about it... but the 2 top reasons I have a hard time being around it is:

1) I have no clue what these people are wanting from me. Do they just want me to listen? But why would they want to be miserable? Do they want a solution? Do they want me to chime in and tell them how "right" they are? Am I supposed to hug them? Leave them alone? ... it's all just so confusing, and you can't right out ask these questions without people getting mad (one of my biggest problems as to reasons why people wind up angry with me, lol), and if they DO give an answer, it's never what they really want and they get all annoyed... /sigh

2) Usually... the reasons just don't make a whole lot of sense to me, so it's just impossible for me to relate on a level well enough to be of any help or to even understand well enough to just listen.

Thank you for the insight. I will definitely remember this. :D

I'll admit to occasionally getting annoyed at displays I think are over the top or silly. I can be impatient when their displays get in the way of getting things done. I try to remind myself that others don't necessarily express themselves the same way I do and keep my impatience to myself.
