I find it hard to have an area of interest because there is always some part of the thing you are interested in that is boring. I mean interests not just for entertainment purposes but interests that are useful in life. Like I used to like every aspect of mathematics but ever since I entered university, I don't like many aspects of mathematics (like linear algebra that doesn't involve a lot of numbers such as proofs). Applied math has lots of thinking too. In music, I have prefect pitch but too bad I'm not good at rhythm and my piano and violin skills are getting sloppy since I don't play often.

It seems as though nothing in life is completely easy-going and you just have to pick something to learn and go with it.

There was a two year period in my life, that I did have a hard time, with that. Not anymore.

Hi Chan,

No I can't get really interested in daily stuff. Cooking is quite good though. Dog walking is ace.
kids were minor miracles of daily interest ,and still are when they get around to visiting. I like doing physical work because you can tune out of head stuff and return to it with a different angle and it's often not boring to do physical work.

I actually find some people interesting as well although I now know exactly the distance to keep from them.

Yes.
It is nice to find another person that feels this.
I can talk at end about Fallout 3 and its add-ons and I can memorize certain numbers and facts from my book about bombers (sometimes forgetting context) but I would like an interest in something useful.
Sadly, it is true that you cannot choose a special interest, it chooses you.
My main special interest now is autism and autistics.

I don't find it hard to have an interest, but I do find it terribly daunting and frustrating to go from one to another and so on and then there's this huge trail of interests glaring back at me. My mom says I like to learn, that I'm a life-long learner, but it's not that - these things suffocate me. In a way, I hate them and I get depressed about it - feeling like I'm just spinning my wheels until I die. I barely catch my breath from one when another gets me.

What you describe sounds similar to how I am about certain things that I used to be really into but now I'm not really inspired by them. For example, from childhood through college I used to really be into language - grammar and I loved verbs. Eventually, my job became language related and I am completely uninterested. I don't care for any pronouns, word derivations, clauses, etc. I do still like verb conjugations, but just barely. Like the meter reading would be just a little blip. I wish I hadn't studied this in school. I hope this helps.

I find it hard to stick to one thing, as soon as it becomes related to school or college then I don't care about them anymore. Before I started college I was really interested in film and certain directors, but once I started an A-Level in Film and it became work it ruined it for me.

I rarely have special interests that are useful in everyday life.

This.

I can be completely immersed in a subject but as soon as it becomes a responsibility I can't be bothered with it anymore.
I used to love working with Photoshop, I was pretty good with it, but when I was coerced into looking for a job dealing with it the intense passion I had evaporated.

Absolutely. That's why I have hundreds of interests. When one bores me, I get a new one, or return to an old one. Only problem is that I never master anything. Jack of all trades and that.

That must have happened with me and photography. As soon as it became more than a hobby I lost interest in it. But I tried to stick with it because it was the only thing I'm skilled at.

same here. i'm majoring in photography in college right now and my enthusiasm to do the work borders on apathy. i just want to be left alone to take pictures on my own time with out the fear of them being graded and critiqued. my mother keeps telling me i'm a good photographer and my brother says i'm a fantastic shooter but i don't...care about school work. i'm trying in the class but it's just reaaaaally annoying.

I have interests, but not any "special" interests as such. I have a short attention span, so I find it hard to really get in to things. So I go on and do something else.

Same here. I get bored with the things I love. I even get exhausted by spending longer than an hour on them.

I get very involved in my interests, but I do sometimes have gaps with nothing to do.

Having an unfocused need for an interest, and not knowing what to do, can be very bothersome and distracting.
