Ehh. I think it was just kind of a flopped joke, not a huge deal.
A good april fool's joke convinces someone (momentarily) of something that, had they thought about it more thoroughly, they would have known it was false. If you make it too realistic, you're not including the "fool" part of it (in the sense of "not thinking hard enough" rather than "I've fooled you"). After all, I could fool you into thinking I was wearing a red shirt today when I was actually wearing a green one; but it wouldn't be particularly funny because it's entirely possible, and not at all out of the ordinary, for me to wear red shirts. Now, if I were to claim I was wearing a gorilla suit to class today, that might be a good prank if I convinced you of it, because such a thing would be entirely out of character for me (I am much more likely to wear Renaissance garb).
