I tend to have it more when I'm excited or really want to get a point across I will repeat myself 2-3 times then mom/dad are like ok we get it you already said it once. (Then they mock me "We know you want a chair over there.") I HATE that they mock me!! !! ! I know others here on WP have this issue as I've made topics similar to this but since the issue came up a few times I thought I would bring the topic up again. Do you have a time you do it more? Do you do it at all?

I do it sometimes when watching cartoons or reading when I see a phrase or rhyme that I like. I also repeat myself when I'm upset or anxious t like you described............. e.g "I don't want you to get rid of the cabinets". Sometimes it's because I need to prepare myself mentally for an event e.g "I come to the alternate exam center at 9 am .... I bring an HB pencil....". I repeat this sometimes three or more times and people eventually get annoyed or patronizing/mocking like you described.

Is it not upsetting having your AS traits picked on like this? Outside of Palilalia I hate screeching of chairs/forks etc. and yet family says it looks weird when I grab at my ears. (The noise hurts my ears I don't like it!) :-( Not to mention other posts from me that they dislike me monologing on interests etc. My family doesn't understand any of my issues!! ! :-(

Sometimes I repeat myself when I get frustrated playing games.

Example:
"Screw you shotgun noob!"
"Geez I hate that guy with the shotgun!"
"I hate that guy he is such a jerkface!"
"What a jerkface man, I can't believe this!"
"I fricking hate that shotgun noob!"

EXACTLY! When I get upset is when I have it the most. :-)

Yeah, I have this issue...I thought it was just a nerd thing, though. My parents used to mock me for it and my boyfriend makes fun of it a lot too. It is...irritating to have it made fun of. Sensory overload is another thing of mine that gets made fun of...in particular, people think it's ridiculous that the sound of chewing makes me cringe, and clanging metal, if it's loud enough can send me reeling...so yeah, I can relate to all of this.

Thanks. Always nice to no I'm not alone in my trait issues and other WPers have the same issues with Aspie traits and even how family treats them. :-)

It's probably more fundamental to autism then Echolallia in some respects

Yeah, I did it a lot when I was young. I remember being teased for it- might be part of what made me stop. That was way before anyone was diagnosed with AS so I just thought there was something wrong with me and I was the only one on the planet that did it.

I do this, and I thought no one seemed to mind until my last summer job. When I get nervous, I tend to repeat what people are saying...I was doing this on a day when i was anxious and one of the other staff had to pull me aside and tell me I was being annoying. It was SO embarrassing considering I didn't know how to explain myself as at the time, I had never thought people noticed.

The irony was that I was working with people with developmental disabilities...some of whom were autistic...these staff were patient with them, yet the people there often had no patience for my own quirks! Sheesh.

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

Zelda, no offense hon but I've seen several posts of yours the last couple of years, and I think it has more to do with you. Yes you have AS, but you might be a little slow. There is nothing wrong with that, it is what it is.

It's very upsetting..........my family mocks my strange facial expressions and gestures or basically anything that looks (or sounds) "weird"

I have palilalia. It sometimes manifests in repeating sentences I just spoke under my breath without me realizing it, and other times in repeating myself minutes, hours or days after saying something. It was much worse when I was a child. It has improved with age, but it acts up when I am excited or upset.

I do have the palilalia in various ways. Most often I get stuck repeating the same sentence or word. Around other people I stop myself once I realize, but alone I just let it go.

Palilalia was in fact the first autistic trait I realized I had, like...15 years ago.

Yes - I do :(

As the others here - much more when I get upset.

My kids used to be very hurt by it because they thought I was just rubbing it in when I was upset at them and angry - they would say sorry or something and I'd repeat the same thing over and over and they'd get frustrated that I just "wouldn't let it go"

It's not that.... it's just my brain stuck on processing the anger and upset I guess. Like a record that gets stuck on a scratched place and goes over and over until something breaks the cycle? When my focus changes it will stop.
