I bought some sugar called halfspoon which contained real sugar plus aspartame, by the end of the week it felt like i was permanently drunk. My friends started wondering what was wrong, and i'm sure it was no coincidence that i had bought half spoon at the same time as i fell ill.

Your probably wondering what this has to do with Autism, etc. Simple, because people with Autism/Aspergers are probably more sensitive to food than most people without Autism. There's a lot of mention of it making ADD much worse too.

So there you have it, just a warning.

I had to get rid of a bunch of LA Bars, designed for LA Weight Loss, that a friend gave me. His intentions were good, but the list of ingredients was enough, for me to put them on that old radio, downstairs in the building that I live in. I'm now on a weight loss journey, eating real food.

I think you're a lot better off being chubby than getting yourself poisoned......amazing that these things are legal isn't it?

I think the bodies of NT people can handle this stuff better than we can, but I don't think it is really good for them either. I stay far away from this stuff as it is very toxic to me.

On my addf forum I just read a highly nerdy thesis by a brilliiant but enigmatic individual who makes a case for sugar being the root of all evil.

Up to and including allergies, Autism, ADHD and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise.
He did not mention the kitchen sink but I am sure thats just an oversight.

That thread in fact started out as a response to a video about autism.

Of course, dont forget that aspartame which is often used as a sugar substitute is a suspect substance in its own right.

Sugar and salt are not evil, it's the paranoid avoidance of them which is evil. By replacing sugar with aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, and any other substitute, low cal or not, we are harming our bodies.
Sugar is our fuel, but we shouldn't be getting it from unhealthy places.

On the topic of diet products being terrible, I HATE diet pills. I fell into quite a hole once with diet pills and anything else one could think of, and they are not fun. All they do is rev up your system. Sure you're burning calories (sort of, you could just walk more instead) but they're putting the body under a very high level of stress all the time. Straining one's blood vessels is dangerous, and that's why diet pills always come with a warning of hearth failure. Diet products are not worth it.

Aspartame or any sweetener makes me sick. I have to stop myself from telling people who drink diet coke or coke zero that they're poisoning themselves.

A bit of sugar and salt is needed for the body to function properly. Salts in most things though so you'll almost always get more than the daily intake. It's easier to cut sugar out. I usually just eat fruit or have a bit in my tea. It gives the chai tea much more flavour. I suppose the ANZAC biscuits I've been munching down have a bit of sugar in them too.

I only drink diet sodas, and it doesn't affect me one bit.

if you go by the fda and clinical trials, all the artificial sweeteners are suspect except sucralose. Unfortunately that kind isn't typically used in diet sodas.

Well obviously it's not gonna affect you right away. Artificial sweeteners are known to be worse than sugar. I don't exactly remember why that is, but I think it has something to do with the body breaking down sugar properly and artificial sweeteners not being processed properly by the body.

I've heard that Truvia, which contains stevia sweetener from the tropical rebiana plant, is ok for you. All I can determine is that it's a natural non-sugar sweetener, made from that plant, so it should be ok. My mom used Truvia to replace artificial sweeteners for my grandpa in the last year of his life since he was diabetic, and it didn't hurt him.

But yeah, all those artificial sweeteners are BAD BAD BAD. Sucralose is made from sugar processed in a certain way, that's the only reason why it won't kill you. Our bodies operate on sugar anyway, but we can't tolerate it being in literally EVERYTHING. Either that or high fructose corn syrup, which will kill you DEAD from obesity and such, and that's in everything too. Monosodium Glutamate is put in foods to make you want to eat more, cause it makes you hungry. Between all of those it's a wonder that there are still thin people around.

The food industry makes you fat via all this crap, then sells you more crap in the form of poisonous diet food and poorly designed weight loss plans. Killing Americans through food and diet pills is a trillion dollar industry, so it won't change, despite the untold suffering of tens of millions. I've started buying food at my city's Italian market, that's the only way I can be SURE that it doesn't contain this garbage. It's expensive, but better broke than dead.

I get violently ill if I consume aspartame but sucralose (Splenda) seems fine with me but I eat very little of it. High fructose corn syrup is just plain poison.

I was amused when I saw the title of your thread, because I thought to myself, "Yeah, tell me something I don't know." :P

Artificial sweeteners taste like poison to me. I won't consume anything that contains them and the same goes for a whole host of other artificial ingredients in food and beverage. I eat as minimal processed food as possible and I believe I am much healthier for it.

I also tend to advise people of the toxicity of artificial sweeteners, especially when I see them drinking copious amounts of diet sodas. Of course, my warnings go unheeded.

I feel like my hypersensitivity with taste and smell gives me a decided advantage in the area of food and drink. I can instinctively tell when something is not healthy or safe to ingest. I remember when I was pregnant, years ago, getting violently ill at certain smells like coffee, cigarette smoke, and one that surprised me, was when I smelled pork ribs being BBQd. Suddenly, I felt like I needed to vomit. I subsequently read that it's nature's way of instinctively protecting the fetus from harm, when the mother's senses become heightened to detect something that could be hurtful to the fetus. Everyone knows about caffeine and cigarette smoke being harmful, but I read that because meat, especially pork, when not fully cooked to kill all bacteria, can be extremely harmful.

I think my natural heightened senses are a blessing.

I'm making the switch to regular Coke on Saturday. I don't want that aspartame in my body.

Aspartame gives me serious headaches, I've been avoiding it for years and years.
