When a teacher reiterates the same information over and over again, I tune out because I already know what he or she is saying and am consequently unable to hold my attention. However, when it comes to the end of the class, I miss many parts of the lesson other students get in the class because I wasn't paying attention and can say the wrong things. If things aren't taught at a fast pace or in a way that's exceedingly interesting, I can't hold my attention. I learn more if I look at the information on my own and prefer it that way because I can go at my own pace. I greatly prefer reading on my own to listening to a lecture.

YES, WOW this is exactly how I am. Even in college. I can make more sense of it alone. I take great notes if I have a great professor/a. I thought my Western Civilization Instructor was going to bore me to death. He was the worst college professor I have ever had. I couldn't wait to get home to make sense out of it.

I think if I have to go to college I would make tape recordings or video tapes of lectures. so I could edit out the useless chaff. I take crappy hand written notes and I am easily distracted by the movements or noises made by my class mates.

I was lucky this year because some of my classes were podcast. I usually ended up skipping the whole classroom thing and just watched the lectures on my own at home. I do find it hard to take good notes though, because like you, I tune out.

I have been very successful with online studies because I cant sit and listen to lectures at all. I read books and online resources to learn everything, and this is the best way for me to learn. Many of the instructors post written lectures. Those are fine and I can understand the material just by reading. So I am basically paying a LOT of money to teach myself using a textbook, but that is just fine with me.

I had that problem, when I was in school.

It annoys me at my college (basic British adult ed. college, not uni) because there is this one girl in our lesson who NEVER pays attention. She's always messing around with her phone, sleeping or drawing all over her paper. Our tutor, who is very good I must add, will explain something in great detail which helps me to cope better (he always explains metaphors and similes to help me!). So ten minutes later, he finishes, this girl gets up, 'could you explain that again please?'.... GAAAAAAH!! !! !

i am like that, very good at big picture but lousy in details. lately, i don't even try to get all the details since i am usually just trying to overview bunch of very different things to find what can work. when i find my target i investigate more but it is always question driven i.e. if i don't think it is relevant for the thing that i am trying to do i don't bother with it.
i imagine my brain like a bucket and honestly i don't think it can hold much so i try to pick just useful things.

In college and beyond, I always took a tape recorder to classes with me. I asked permission to tape beforehand, and the professors never had a problem with it. I am the same way, if the information is too slow-paced for me I tune out and then miss other things. With a tape, you can fast forward through the endless repetitions and get anything you might have tuned out. If your handwriting sucks like mine does, it's also far superior to taking written notes.

This girl is wasting everyone's time and someones money. She should just go flip burgers somewhere. Sorry- I just have no respect for people who cant even try. There are people who cannot go to college for a variety of reasons who would certainly sit there and at least try to listen to the material.

May be a sign of giftedness. Beside a good long-term memory, I don't see reasons to think asperger alone make you learn faster.

May or not be how I was inatentive in class in elementary school, can't be sure though.
