Sometimes I wonder if there was a cure for autism, would it make my life better? I have these stange obsessions that I'm not comfortable discussing, and I can't communicate well with others face to face. Plus I still have meltdowns and I'm graduating high school this year - I fear that these will keep me from keeping a job or living independently. Maybe if they DID find a cure for autism, life wouldn't be so hard for people going through the same thing.

I don't think a cure can exist w/o destroying who the person is. (I would refuse a cure, personally.) But trust me, things get better & if you go to college, you may make friends who are much more understanding than HS kids. :)

While I agree, it would be nice if several of the traits could be 'cured', like social cues/anxiety, complete obsessions/time wasters...

I don't really want a cure, but if one were offered that would guarantee the me same outcome that the person in the book, "The Speed of Dark," got, I would take it.

I consider myself cure curious. I'd have to see the before and after of several people. Then depending on what the alterations and/or side effects are, I'd evaluate it.

If there was a cure for autism, I would refuse to take it.

I know!

A person with AS or Autism is like a peanut butter & jelly sandwich with peanut butter on both pieces of bread -- the peanut butter and bread are the person's personality and the jelly being the autism; you can't take away the jelly without scraping away a lot of the peanut butter, just like you can't take a person's autism away and have the same personality.

If there was a cure, I would take it in a heartbeat. Even if they said as a side effect, I would die 10 years to the day after I took it.

If that 'cure' would differentiate between private and professional life, I'd consider it. Otherwise, no!

If the cure enabled me to stop feeling depressed and anxious, helped me to focus and get things done, took away all my fears and phobias, and heck, just made me feel happy then I'd grab it with both hands! Who in their right mind would want to continually live this way if there was a cure to end it?

You do realize that the language that the book was using basically says that the original person died, and a completely new person took his place, right?

If there was a "cure" it would most benefit a child who has all their life left to live. Older people MIGHT benefit, but there would have to be programs to enable them to take advantage of what the change makes possible for them because all they've ever known is life as an autistic.

It didn't seem that way to me! The original person wanted to work in a space program, and was able to do so after the cure. Perhaps I interpreted it differently than you did. :)

I just want to say that this is the most accurate description I've seen yet. I'm definitely going to remember this metaphor for future use lol.
