Is it pretty common for aspies to be dependent on having an NT social translator? I feel like every boyfriend I have becomes my social translator, and then when I am without one I go crazy because I feel like I'm cut off from the world. I actually had to break up with my last one because I didn't love him anymore, but it was so difficult because I needed his help. I don't want to be dependent on someone for this, how do you guys cope? Does anyone relate to this?

I've never had an NT translator. I've had to make do with myself and what I get and pick up from people, the net, books, movies etc.

Can't say that I have used boyfriends for this but I think my sister is pretty good at it when I explicitly ask her about stuff. Most people just laugh and think I'm weird when I have different beliefs to others, or worse, they try and bring me around to their way of thinking.

My wife is the "social translator". After hanging out with some peeps, she usually tells me what I did that was goofy and I ask her what so-and-so meant by ____ . Unfortunately, this means I do not have a social translator for when I don't understand her. Our relationship can get pretty stressful when I react in my own way to something I have completely misinterpreted.
