Happens constantly with my parents.

Lately I've been stuck in a rut. Hours being cut, troubles of not having a car.

My parents keep suggesting all this crap such as me getting a job with construction in apprenticeship where I get paid good wages, etc. But each time I point out that my stepdad has been getting laid off lately and any other issues that show it's a bad idea, I get the lecture that I am too negative and that each time they have a great idea I just shoot it down.

But what if I just don't wanna get my hopes up? I don't want to quit a job I've been at for 4 and a half years for a literal career gamble at something that might be a bad choice in this economy.

Trust me, you're not being too negative. You have the right idea about construction, and your parents are being naive about it. My dad and brother-in-law used to work in construction, and the worse the economy got, the fewer jobs they were offered until it was like they didn't have jobs at all.

The grocery business is a much better alternative, because no matter how bad the economy gets, people will always shop for groceries.

You want naive? My father once suggested that I walk into a newspaper's office and say " Gee, I always wanted to write." :lmao:

"You're being negative" is something NTs say when you're not saying what they want you to say.

If NTs don't hear, what they want to hear, than they try to shoot us down, and call us negative.

I've learned this one the hard way. When someone has an idea they think is the most brilliant idea ever to pour from human thought, and it just happens that you're actions/desires/ideas do not align with theirs... particularly if that idea involves the presumption of dictating choices you know to be your own... Anything you say that they can argue with, they will. Excuses made to such people, reasons you know to be perfectly valid to you, are just the thing it takes to keep them going. They figure any reason you give is your way of either seeking their help to solve the "problem" with doing it their way, or just you making an excuse to avoid doing the "right" thing. So you think you're giving your good, sensible reasons for not doing so and and they figure if they can discredit or refute these reasons, you'll give in and do things their way.

But yeah, that can be summed up as above. You didn't kiss their feet and thank them for steering you onto the right path, thus it's your problem for never seeing the bright side. According to them, that is.

I don't think of it as being negative, but rather being realistic.
