I came about my diagnosis in an odd way, as I've posted before. I was seeing a general psychological therapist for unspecific emotional instability/marital issues, and so I could keep taking Adderall to help in school, and she offhandedly suggested that I might have Asperger's Syndrome. I did some digging, found out how it explained everything and made perfect sense, but refused to self-diagnose and passively tried to find out how I would come about a diagnosis, finding no helpful information. Then I mentioned it to my mom, at which point I found out that she discovered and confirmed my AS when I was a kid. So now I have it, and can skip the diagnosis process as it already happened. That's a relief, not gonna lie.

But considering the fact that all of my former psychologists or psychiatrists from when I was a kid are either no longer practicing or have moved their practice, and my mom doesn't remember which one found the AS anyway, I have no clue as to where to go next. My current therapist had to take an indefinite leave of absence and didn't know anything about AS anyway so she couldn't give me any names or relevant contacts, and I can't find any names of any kind of specialist or anything in my area online.

My goals, well what I'm looking for, are to find a regular therapist with an AS specialization, preferably who has experience and knowledge about adult females on the spectrum (since I'm in need of a therapist at this point anyway) to help me work on creating a more accommodating lifestyle for myself as well as cope with difficulties in communication, sensory issues and other stuff. I'd also like to be able to have some marriage counseling, either with this person or another who also has AS experience. (I give the other person option because it's been my personal experience and source of frustration that different practices have varying policies about individual vs. couples counseling. Most places won't let you get counseling with your spouse from the same person you are getting individual therapy with, or even let your spouse be present for anything, but ideally I prefer one person for both functions. Just fewer people trying (and potentially failing) to understand you, and your spouse, and fewer chances for conflicting opinions. But I digress.)

I know it seems like a lot to ask. But those are my ideal goals, from a perfect world, and I just want to know how and where to look for something as close to these goals as I can realistically get.

So how can I find out if and where there are AS specialists in my area, and whether I can afford them?

I would start with your "regular" doctor (if you have one) or contact the state mental health department. Hopefully!, one of those two entities will be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck! :)

And also, given your "wish list" don't cut yourself off from the resources here..

There ARE married members here and there are people who have learned coping strategies, a wealth of tips can be given for you to find the one that works for you. having someone IRL to talk to is good, but also remember, Wrongplanet is here ;)
