My left and right brain work fairly nicely when focusing on hemisphere specific activities (like math and art, respectively.) But the two just cant seem to flow in sync with each other very well. (For example, when I socialize, I can either read/express emotion (right brain) or speak in conversation (left brain) but the two dont work harmoniously so socializing never gets far for me.)
Can I compare notes with you other aspies? :?:

i've read that some folk swear by Robert Monroe's Hemi-Sync brain synchronization recordings. i tried 'em and nothing happened, but i suppose that is because i am just dense.

I know I am right brain oriented but I'm not sure what to look for re: integration. Is there a test?

Don't know. But I was once accused of flipping from left-brain to right-brain at breakneck speed.....it's probably true, I can be talking very scientifically and suddenly I'll drop out a crisp, vernacular comment that must have come from the other side of my brain. I don't like getting stuck in the scientific side of my head. It's as if I have a built-in nerd alarm.

I'm not particularly dominant on one side or the other but I don't think I understand this concept of integration.

I am right brain dominant...and left handed...that syncs up...but I would also think that for a right brained person, my left eye would be dominant, and it is my very very bad eye..I sorta feel at times that I am hemisphericly divergent and both sides act on their own accords...I am supposed to be visually/spatially oriented, but I have difficulty with perspective and depth perception...I have dyscalculea, I am musically inclined, but not when it is broken down into technical terms...um...inclined towards writing. Can often think more articulately than I can speak, but in thinking get stuck in really stupid loops on things...Dunnow...I guess I am all over the place/Need integration...

duh...

the late robert monroe believed that if you could get both sides of your brain working in synchrony, that you would be a much more effective human being in general. think of it as like being in a marriage- a harmonious partnership between husband and wife [or spouse and spouse] is a much more productive partnership than a dysfunctional one in which both partners snipe at one another and generally do their own thing.

I kind of got that part, I just don't see how you can tell if the halves are working together or not. Like what kind of signs there would be? Like if someone started writing essays about mathematics, the two halves were working together but if they couldn't solve a math problem and use their words at the same time to explain to someone else what they were doing, the two halves weren't working together?

But that's even the only example I can come up with right now. How do you know if right and left are co-operating well? If things in life are going awry, how can you tell whether it's due to poor hemisphere integration or some other cause? That's the part I don't really understand.

Use your non dominant hand to do tasks like writing, eating, bottom wiping, playing cricket etc.

Do different things with your brain. Try meditation, I believe it helps cool down the left brain a lot. If you do a lot of math, logic or whatever, try painting. If you like to read, try audiobooks for a change, or vice versa. Write poetry. The main thing is to try to use the brain in ways you don't habitually, and do things you're not naturally inclined to do.

I heard, I forget from whom, that rotating your eyes left to right can bring hemispherical balance to the brain. Can't vouch for that.

Here's one. A bit basic.

I am rather right brained.

the following link is a very information-dense page that may illuminate the real-world effects of hemispheric brain dysfunction-

oxford journal article about hemispheric dysfunction

From what I've learned, the corpus callosum is what allows the left and right brain hemispheres to communicate. I also read that people who play instruments such as pianos, tend to have a more developed corpus callosum than those who don't, meaning their left and right brain communicate better. You may want to read more about this.

I've already taken tests and know I'm right brain oriented, I was wondering if there were tests to determine if one's two halves were integrated. But I am just remembering something they suggested for my son a few years back. It's called "brain gym" or something and it's using kinetics to stimulate both sides of the brain at once. I went to a class at community college for 1 night because they had a guest speak on the subject. I do remember I felt more alert after the exercises.

I use Hemi-Sync (Hemispheric Synchronization). It helps me understand, concentrate, communicate, contemplate and remember better, when used on a consistent basis. It's a great stress reducer as well. I love it.

I just wanted to add that Hemi-Sync is NOT recommended for people who have a tendency towards seizures, auditory disorders or adverse mental conditions.
TMI (The Monroe Institute) also recommends to not use Hemi-Sync without first discussing it with your doctors.
