Jumping through the hoops of getting a diagnosis?
I spoke with my insurance company today, and they told me that they do not pay for Autism testing unless it is being used to rule out another diagnosis. In other words, I must go see a therapist with another presenting problem in order to get tested. I know that there are two things that I could present, but at this time I do not feel I need help with them. I'm afraid that if I go for testing, I'm going to end up with a diagnosis that someone will feel needs to be treated, and I'm just not sure I'm willing to go through that mess right now.
Has anyone else ever had this problem? What did you do?
Also, does anyone have tips picking a therapist who is astute enough to recognize the difference between someone who is a little socially awkward, but otherwise normal, and someone who has the capability to do fairly well socially only because they have learned to force themselves to do so?
