I grew up before diagnosis was available, so my childhood experiences of bullying (and they were myriad) could not be evaulated in terms of my social deficits. With the clarity of hindsight, I have been much better able to understand my bullies' actions. While not excusing their behaviour, or my own, the understanding does allow me to better understand my circumstances.
I went to an extremely good, private boys' school. The general approach in my school was an early form of zero-tolerance for fighting, which meant that both parties involved in a fight would be punished. Pleas of, "I didn't start it!" fell on deaf ears. That being said, teachers were far more perceptive than I realized about what was going on, and I suspect I was the beneficiary of more than one incident of convenient interference.
