I never noticed I did this before but, when I'm sitting in my room alone at the computer or whatever I rock to myself. I don't do this in public. Well, actually I do rock my chair back and forth if I'm at a lunch table sometimes. But that's not a full body rock.

This is totally a stim, right? Does anyone else do this? I think I might actually stim more alone than in public.

I'm assuming you mean rocking your body back & forth rather than jamming like a rockstar in public

I used to rock in public, but since I found out about AS, I try not to.

I rock back-to-front on my feet when standing, if I'm talking to someone I don't know or fully trust, or surrounded by strangers (usually accompanied with a hand flap involving my keys). I even do this standing in line at the grocery.

Alone or around people I'm comfortable with, the stim becomes a side-to-side sway.

The only time it stops is if I'm at the computer, or drawing or doing something that distracts from my normal high anxiety level. I think its the (mostly unconscious) anxiety associated with sensory processing difficulties that causes the stim.

But yeah, rocking is totally a stim.

I rock constantly, public or private. I rock standing up or sitting down. I don't see anything wrong with it, and so far the only person who has commented on it is my mother, throughout my life, always saying "rocky rocky rocky rocky".

I do this most of the time when I'm alone but will occasionally find myself doing it when in public. I rarely notice I'm doing it without thinking about it -- I'm far more inclined to wave my hand or shake my leg/tap my foot which I do most of the time...

I only rock when I'm alone, because I try hard not to do it around people. I feel tense a lot when I'm around people because I can't do it.

I definitely stim more alone than in public. In public I'll click or grind my teeth a lot because it's the only way to let it out without people seeing. Or I swing my feet, I'm usually short enough to do that while sitting in a chair.

I rock basically whenever I'm sitting down. When I stand for long periods, I sometimes sway side-to-side or forward and backward, but usually still wish I were sitting down so I could rock.

Except at my computer, when I sit in this particular chair, which spins. Then I twist at the waist, keeping my upper body facing the same direction but letting my lower body go maybe a quarter of a spin and then back.

The interesting thing is that it's easier to rock while slouching.

Anyway, yeah, I rock! We Aspies rock more than NTs, so there!

Occasionally, when I'm upset.

My grandma on the other hand is almost constantly rocking and I wish she would stop. She had a brain injury and she calls attention to herself.

I sway side-to-side most of the time, on rare occasions I do rock, but its usually only when I'm in fetal position.

I rock a lot when I'm by myself especially when I'm listening to music but I don't think I do it in public

I've always rocked to one degree or another. As a toddler I did a rock/bonking the head against the crib 'till the crib fell apart; there was no Asperger's then, so my parents would just put the crib back together and let me do my thing. And I've always had a chair I could rock in; never thought anything of it, that's what they're made for right? Funny how times change: if I was a kid now, I'd probably be hustled off to the nearest child shrink and stuffed full of the pills du jour.

Although I've always been a bit self conscious about the subtle rocking I do in public, since the dx I don't care as much. I don't think I make a spectacle of myself, it feels good and calms me down, which I need very much right now.
