Are you currently obsessed with a fictional character from a book or a cartoon/anime character?
I am having a rebound with one of mine. If you have obsessions, don't be afraid to make a list like mine...

Sonic the Hedgehog * The most embarrassing*
Vegeta from Dragonball Z
Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance
Ayame Sohma from Fruits Basket

Recently, I got the DVD's of Dragonball Z, and had a rebound with Vegeta. Now, I am beginning to have another rebound with Raistlin after I started reading some Dragonlance again. The thing I hate the most about it is that they ARE NOT REAL, yet these fictional character haunt my MIND! I love to write fanfics, or draw pictures. I don't do it as much now that I'm older, but I still feel the urge to do something about the obsessive feelings that gets me closer to someone that's not real.
I think it all boils down to the fact that I have intense sympathy for "messed up" people with dark pasts, and I also REALLY need a man in my life! (Though he doesn't need to be messed up too)
The length of my obsessions are about 2-3 years, but that's not counting the dang REBOUNDS!

I've never been obsessed with a character. What I get obsessed with are the worlds themselves, how they're arranged, how things work, from the systems of magic to the politics to the history. I went through a "Lord of the Rings" phase during which I was quite capable of spouting Quenya, creation legends, and hobbit family trees at anyone who cared to listen.

:P Tolkien himself seemed to be obsessed with Middle Earth and its fictional histories. I've never seen an imaginary PLACE described in such minute detail over so many nonexistent generations, with the endless lists of begats and begottens and son of and great great grandfather to...

Thousands of years from now, archaeologists will dig up copies of Lord of the Rings and start searching for the lost continent of Middle Earth...

Which is kind of ironic, considering that Numenor was supposed to be an analogue of Atlantis.

When I first saw this thread, I thought it said

"Obsessions are for People Who are Not Real"

:? I couldn't for the life of me imagine why anyone would insist that having an obsession means you are a less than honest person.

I'm currently obsessed with the little green Aliens from the Toy Story Movies. Previously I've had obsessions with Scooby Doo, Barney (when I was little), and a mild obsession with Goku. Also, I've generally been obsessed with Pokemon at various points. A large part of one of my college admissions essays was actually about Pokemon. And yes, I got in. Also, the Harry Potter series was an obsession.

The length of my obsession varies.

For a long time, Reg Barclay from STAR TREK: TNG and VOYAGER.

I think it was a matter of very closely identifying with him.

My characters--from role-plays and stories--pretty much live in my head. It takes about a month for a character to grow from the seed of an idea; and after that, they take on a life of their own. The villains are a little uncomfortable to live with; you just want to smack them upside the head sometimes.

I think maybe anybody who writes for fun has characters living in their head. How else are you going to write about them clearly enough to let the reader meet them properly?

Yes. All my life or most of it anyway. I have a universe or two based around Tinkerbell from Peter Pan (all the other characters in said universe I made up except in the newer version I added a character from the second official Peter Pan book). I also have a universe largely made up of characters I invented when I was a kid (and they have kids though I usually go back and forth through there timeline and I haven't really gone forward much with them as none of the second generation have ever gotten passed teenage and rarely that old). Of course all those characters are loosely based off all kinds of things (mainly Escape to Witch Mountain which as a kid I remembered parts of but not the name of the movie. And a book series I used to read which ended far too soon (I have all the books in the series. There's only six of them and none of them are very long). Also old monster movies (The wolfman mostly) and one movie I've never seen but I liked the picture on it (I saw it at a video rental place and I think I carried it around reading the back of the box and looking at the cover the whole time we were in the store but we didn't get it. I was called The Ketchup Vampire and I borrowed at least two maybe three of the characters off that box). I spend most of my time making up stories in my head. Which would be nicer if I could translate them into written form and make money off them.

And in the last year and a half I started roleplaying so more characters to make up stories for. :)

I've had character obsessions my whole life. I refer to characters I'm obsessed with as my "imaginary friends" since they live in my imaginary world and interact with my alter-ego. In actuality it's probably closer to the way that writers process stories in their minds rather than the typical play associated with children who have imaginary friends.

My Current Character Obsessions:

Alice and the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland (2010/Tim Burton version)
Jareth the Goblin King from Labyrinth
Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005/Johnny Depp version)
Edward from Edward Scissorhands
Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd
Officer Tom Hanson from 21 Jump Street
Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker from Cry-Baby

This is one of the reasons why I read/write a lot of fanfiction. As far as who, my biggest would likely be Data from Star Trek TNG. I'll assume it's because I identify to a degree with his character, though I do have other characters who I really obsess over.
