How do you feel when you are with someone who literally never stops talking? I just got back from this scenario and my teeth are still on edge. I get overloaded and I want to scream. I feel like my brain is being punched. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't all prattle.

I tend to zone out. My grandmother is like that and I was half-raised by her. She'll go on and on, going on tangents and repeating stories she's already told many times. She when she gets done, she might say something like, "Well, I can't do all the talking" which I take it as my cue to perform some free association recollection of my life and meaningful events. But I usually ask if we can watch some TV.

And please realize of course that this is what we sometimes inflict on others!

But again, I can real easily get into my mode of all-sending, no-receiving.

Can't you?

Can feel very embarrassing.

I'm learning that the long, involved Interesting stories are more for my writing.

And the very imperfect ping-ponging back and forth is when I'm sitting, standing, walking with a real flesh and blood human being.

Writing the intricate thoughts rather than converse verbally...
ya, I need to do that. Would prevent many
embarrassing attempts at being social (AARG!)

I zone out, or if they're really annoying I excuse myself and get away from them.

I feel like avoiding that person for the rest of my life.

Then I do.

If you are familiar with the concept of "monkey mind" then I will explain by saying this person verbalizes her monkey mind.
It's constant verbal stream of consciousness with no pauses.

Willard, exactly!

I find that being very direct helps. Try saying "That's just not very interesting." or "I really don't care." or "You said that already." Some will appreciate your bluntness and stop. Some will get annoyed and avoid you in the future. Either way, problem solved.

Some will ignore you an keep talking. Then I'd suggest either leave the vicinity of the person, and hopefully you can outrun them if need be, or set them on fire. Check with your local zoning laws before doing the latter.

The HFA/AS group I go to has this problem. It's a discussion group, and there are maybe 2 or 3 people who NEVER SHUT UP and talk about the most meaningless things. I'm generally a patient person, but it's to the point that I can't go to the group anymore for fear of screaming, "NOBODY CARES!! !!"
