Any crass, bigoted assumption anyone has ever made about the minds of autistic people who actually rock back and forth in corners, drool, or do anything which many people associate with 'lower intelligence' is probably a myth. It's not a myth that some autistic people do that; it's a myth that those who do have no mind, no rights, are completely undesirable in every way, and are entirely inferior to the supposed 'high functioning super special aspies' based on a few superficial traits .
And then people start complaining about how intolerant and petty the NT's are supposed to be.
Quoting this for truth.
My contribution to the list might be a repitition of another point, but here are a few myths I've come across:
- all autistic people do obvious stims (such as flapping and grunting and echolalia, etc).
- all autistic people stim.
- all aspies are completely helpless in every area besides their obsession (in which case, they are supergeniuses).
- anyone who was once diagnosed with classic autism or a more severe form of PDD-NOS will stay at that severity for the rest of their life
- autistic people have no potential (unless they are savants or aspies)
- low functioning autistic people are stupid, shallow and/or infantile in their nature.
- aspies and those diagnosed with autistic disorder cannot identify with one another
- no diagnostician will ever re-diagnose a child who was earlier diagnosed with autistic disorder with aspergers even if their cognitive profile matches that of a typical aspie.
- all aspies are either elitist or self loathing.
- autistic people are all little s**ts
- autistic people are all little angels
- autistic people cannot work in the creative industry
- autistic people are only good at computers, science (as long as it's not a social science) and maths.
- autistic people are all asexual.
- autistic people are all sexual predators.
- autistic people cannot ever form a meaningful relationship.
- all autistic people are worthless.
- autistic people are a burden onto families.
- it's only okay to be autistic if you have a superpower to make up for it.
Aren't the lies that people spew fun?
