Some that I've been told:
People with Asperger's talk like robots, and can only be logical
People with Asperger's do not experience emotions, and do not enjoy any social contact.
And my favourite..
There is no way somebody with Asperger's could go to university.

That they are agressive. I might be myself but that doesn't mean all people with AS are.

That we all have Just Autism, when in fact many, er, most of us rip up the DMS-V with our comorbid diagnoses. Think of how many aspies and auties have depression, ADHD, GAD, and OCD, and those are just the most common.

That somehow all people in the autistic spectrum are like The Rain Man in some way, how absurd..

We're all like Dr Spock, or Data.

We're not really interested in other people. We only like other people who share our obsessions.

We're all interested in Star Trek and/or Star Wars, and love to dress up in Vulcan or Yoda outfits and go to conventions...

We like to shout out inappropriate and insensitive comments at inconvenient times, e.g. at funerals (although granted...Tourettes and Autism might share a common link)

We never read fiction because we don't understand it.

We take every single metaphor literally.

We cannot understand sarcasm at all (this is true for some people with Autism, but not everyone)

We can multiply frighteningly large numbers in our head in an instant.

Seriously, NTs would have trouble too if everyone around them had a different neurological wiring.

Wait....how is "have trouble socializing" a myth? Isn't it part of the diagnostic criteria? How can you get an Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis if you have no trouble socializing?

A friend of mine is diagnosed and she has no trouble socializing. The point of this thread is to point out generic flaws in assumptions made by the (illiterate) masses, and not to create a 100% correct diagnosis criteria. Point: You CAN LEARN to socialise.

LOL, let sleeping bears sleep. We dont want to wake up the Elitist aspises who want to cure NT's. I was one of them myself...

Thats MR Spock, Dr Spock is a writer. And yes it is absurd that we like to wear ST uniforms, i haven't used mine in years! :D

Some of the BS MYTHS i've identified while talking to NTs:

- Only children can have ASD's.

- ASD's cannot be productive members of society.

- ASD's are all rational and never lies or assumes things.

- ASD's do not enjoy being touched by anyone, even girlfriends.

- ASD's have no empaty.

- ASD's are all stalkers.

Any crass, bigoted assumption anyone has ever made about the minds of autistic people who actually rock back and forth in corners, drool, or do anything which many people associate with 'lower intelligence' is probably a myth. It's not a myth that some autistic people do that; it's a myth that those who do have no mind, no rights, are completely undesirable in every way, and are entirely inferior to the supposed 'high functioning super special aspies' based on a few superficial traits .

And then people start complaining about how intolerant and petty the NT's are supposed to be.

Quoting this for truth.

My contribution to the list might be a repitition of another point, but here are a few myths I've come across:

- all autistic people do obvious stims (such as flapping and grunting and echolalia, etc).
- all autistic people stim.
- all aspies are completely helpless in every area besides their obsession (in which case, they are supergeniuses).
- anyone who was once diagnosed with classic autism or a more severe form of PDD-NOS will stay at that severity for the rest of their life
- autistic people have no potential (unless they are savants or aspies)
- low functioning autistic people are stupid, shallow and/or infantile in their nature.
- aspies and those diagnosed with autistic disorder cannot identify with one another
- no diagnostician will ever re-diagnose a child who was earlier diagnosed with autistic disorder with aspergers even if their cognitive profile matches that of a typical aspie.
- all aspies are either elitist or self loathing.
- autistic people are all little s**ts
- autistic people are all little angels
- autistic people cannot work in the creative industry
- autistic people are only good at computers, science (as long as it's not a social science) and maths.
- autistic people are all asexual.
- autistic people are all sexual predators.
- autistic people cannot ever form a meaningful relationship.
- all autistic people are worthless.
- autistic people are a burden onto families.
- it's only okay to be autistic if you have a superpower to make up for it.

Aren't the lies that people spew fun?

aspies cant grow and change and overcome difficulties
I have experienced this one from therapists who see that I am higher fuctioning than she thinks a aspie should be.
However as a kid, I was very hindered by it. My verbal IQ was in the middle mental retardation range and my non verbal Iq was 140
Now my verbal IQ is about 120...significant improvement

aspies are all alike. If you dont fit the stereotype...you are just a wannabe

as for the aspies good at math myth...I am truely horrible at math. A total disconnect with numbers, but I am very creative which defies another common myth.

I just realized aspies not letting their emotions getting in the way is just a myth

Autism is a childhood disorder

All autistics are savants

People with autism have no empathy

Aspies are good at math

All autistic people are good at drawing

Autistic people never get married and can't have friends and relationships
