Emotional Disturbance

Quote:
...a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance:

(A) An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors.

(B) An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers.

(C) Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances.

(D) A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression.

(E) A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems.” (2)

Some of the characteristics and behaviors seen in children who have an emotional disturbance include:

Hyperactivity (short attention span, impulsiveness);
Aggression or self-injurious behavior (acting out, fighting);
Withdrawal (not interacting socially with others, excessive fear or anxiety);
Immaturity (inappropriate crying, temper tantrums, poor coping skills); and
Learning difficulties (academically performing below grade leve
l).

Why is not being able to cope and "inappropriate crying" referred to as immaturity?

Immaturity because the Mainline's mantra is "Get over it" and if you have not or cannot get over it and grow out of it and forget about it - you have not matured.

I was given a label like this back in school. I think it was due to my bipolar disorder.

Yea. I suppose the "mature" ones who have "learned" to "get over it" merely learned to cope with their own insecurity by looking down their nose at those who have not "gotten over it" through the usage of lame pseudo-intellectual pop-psychology arguments.

I got an IEP back in school for this label... I was REALLY bad, except I could learn :?

I mostly had bad social skills, ADHD-like things and horrific meltdowns.

I wasn't able to learn much of anything. Instead of addressing my real issue, they stuck me in a SED class. "Severely Emotionally Disturbed" Blah...

I was put in Honor's courses part of the day and Special Education for the rest of the day. Special ed did NOTHING, I just sat in there, did puzzles or something or did my homework.

I remember in special ed in junior high, if you solved a puzzle, you got candy. Well... I was very good at solving puzzles 8)

I was never put into the gifted classes. When they tried partially mainstreaming me, I was put in the remedial classes. The SED class was a lot like what you described your special ed class in middle school. I didn't last a whole year there, thankfully. The teacher hit on me and there wasn't another one in the district. So... I was moved back to remedial and special ed classes.
