Is having video game dreams really so weird?

I just signed up, and made my intro post over on the "Getting to know each other" board.

Anyway, something that's seemed odd to me all my life are how people think it's so weird to have video game-related dreams. Why is that so strange? I'll see forum posts ask if anyone ever had such a dream. A lot of people will say never, and some will say something like, "Just once." Pretty much no one ever admits to having such dreams on a regular basis, even people who game a lot. Well, I do have video game dreams... I'd say probably half or most of my dreams are influenced by video games in some way. Is it really so strange to dream about something that you spend a lot of time with? Or are normal people just not like that, regardless of how much time they invest in an activity?

In addition to that, it seems like whenever someone talks about a "weird" dream they had, it sounds pretty mundane to me. Most of my dreams that I can remember are rather bizarre (be they related to video games or not).

If you read my other post, you'd know that I don't have a diagnosis, but I was wondering if dreams involving your special interests (as well as dreams with crazy, nonsensical plots) were the norm for people on the autistic spectrum.

My GF has these very often, I only have them from time to time. However my dreams are so weird when I tell people about them, they say, "Man you are one crazy guy." I did have one that was similar to L4D but when we went to go kill a zombie it turned out to be an old guy who said, "None of you will get back your loan on this timeshare," and I was all like WTF?! Then a guy behind me goes, "Well it is a pretty sweet timeshare." Needless to say I woke up rather puzzled.

It used to dream a bit of videogames... or more like in "videogame" when I was younger. Usually it wasn't ever a specific game, but more like playing something like a game...

No, not at all. Most of my video game related dreams were unique concepts though....I had one about 2 weeks ago, it was for a RPG (not the turn based ones but something like Kingdom Hearts) and I was fighting a boss or something. I feel it's a signal to either go forward and do something creative or have it play out in my head until I do, and even though it's my dream to be a game developer I don't know where to begin.

I don't game anymore, but I still have a lot of video game-based dreams. One of the most vivid was a dream where I was Link from Legend of Zelda and I was fighting a dragon on top of a tower. Usually I dream about playing games based on my special interests.

I think I've had dreams before where I was video game character. I don't seem to remember having them any more recently, but they are usually games that I've been playing.

I had a dream where my real friends were present, and some fairly mundane albeit scary events were taking place, BUUUUT we were all located in the apocalyptic world of Fallout 3.

Its not weird. If games are a big part of your life its very normal. I used to dream about games a lot.

I used to have dreams about playing Super Mario Bros, back in 1990, at the age of 15. I was obsessed with Nintendo, back in the day.

i have dreamed halo and this game called lugaru. I wonder if people are more likely to dream those style of games where it is first person or third person but like a camera looking at their back.

I find if i dream about games it just means i have been playing to much. i dreamed battlestar galactica once because i had watched many many episodes in a day.

I often have these when I've been attempting to induce lucid dreaming. I think my mind finds the whole video game paradigm a good way of connecting imagery and control over it. Like a video game.

When I'm really into a game, I regularly dream about it - I see nothing odd about it - your dreams typically reflect your thoughts and experiences - if a game is taking up a lot of your thoughts, it's natural that you'd dream about it.

I do tend to have dreams involving my special interests. It's not every dream by any means, but it happens.

The most amusing thing to me is when my weird dreams attempt to explain themselves according to Treknobabble! ;)

Not at all weird! Actually, it's a known phenomenon:

I have dreams that are related to video games a lot. Just today I had one like Starfox. I don't even play them that often anymore.
