I was doing the dishes and dad said "See I showed you a way to do them easier but you refuse to change, that's whats going to mess you up in college you refuse to change your behavior." (I was doing the dishes the way I usually do them) I didn't say anything to this and just went to my room. I don't believe in being someone you are not and changing your behavior to sute others I believe in being yourself. :-) What are your thoughts? Thanks,

Heard this all my life. Everything I do is different from the way I tie my shoelaces to the way I hold my pen. When I worked in a supermarket, the section manager kept slagging me off because I kept the bread trays on the other side of the aisle and kept pacing up and down instead of keeping the bread close to the shelves which would have saved time.

Your father has a point, though. If you want to succeed at university, you have to be receptive to new ways of doing things; especially things that save time and energy. If you don't change to meet the demands of university life, you just end up feeling frustrated.

Define "easier" when it comes to doing dishes.

I don't believe in that either. HOWEVER, in certain situations it is necessary to do things a certain way, even if it doesn't make sense. For example, at a job your employer might require particular procedures for a task/set of tasks and you will have to do what he asks if you want to keep the job.

College may be a different story, depending on the kind of professors you get. Some will be very relaxed and will only care that you get the assignments done. Others may be more rigid. For example: you may be required to write a research paper for a class. The professor could ask you to do it in very specific stages/parts: outline, initial research/literature review, draft #1 of the research, draft #2 of the research (according to his edits on draft #1), results/conclusions and, finally, the entire thing put together. I had to do at least one paper like that in grad school. I can't remember if any of my undergraduate professors required this.

While your dad could have been a bit less harsh (and definitely less generalizing about you as a person), he does have a point. I'm not saying you would not be able to follow these kinds of directions--just giving you a "heads-up" as to how you may have to "change" in order to succeed in certain classes with certain kinds of professors.

Hope this helps. Btw, if you run into any issues at college (or anywhere else) that you find puzzling or strange, feel free to PM me, always. :)

I'm slightly different, in the sense that I'm willing to change how I do something if it's more efficient. The problem is usually convincing me that it is actually more efficient.

I have to agree here, and I will add that it's important to pick your battles. In the privacy of your home you should be able to do things the way that you want, but efficiency is very valuable when you're studying or later working. Sometimes you do have to compromise what is comfortable for the sake of good time management.

I think your dad probably meant well, but the way he went about making his point was rather crappy. And I really don't think it matters how quickly you do dishes. It's not a contest, it's a chore.

Just my 2 cents.

I think he and family are looking for me to fail/screw up as I did before I HOPE and PRAY that's not the case! I agree with a past recent topic of mine it probably doesn't matter the degree or whatever I'll never meet there standards and I should go to class for me and no one else (which yall are right!) :-) Thanks for your views. :-) (Also BTW I have done a paper that went by a very strict method I hated it!) Sadly the English tutour was scratching her head confused about it LOL! ( I later worried about doing English 2 and Psych 101 papers but since for those I chose topics I liked they were alot easier and alot more fun) to write. :-)

I agree 100%. This is for YOU completely. I have total faith that you will prove them all to be wrong.

That always helps. Whenever possible (unless the topic is assigned), pick subjects you are REALLY PASSIONATE about (knowing you as I do from your posts, that shouldn't be too difficult :D ).

LOL! Ya English was HELL! I had never written a "research" paper (a book report yes) research paper no. It was a summer course so I had 5 weeks and so I chose Atkins (it was the fad/in diet thing at the time) I back then had a tendency to get my words onto paper and turn it in (sorry if I upset anyone with my posts but surely you guys obviously see my grammar isn't the best) I focus on getting ideas/words onto paper. When I did Psychology the teacher put a post it note honey very thorough but have someone check for grammatical errors. I have to have it in my hand so I read and did the best I could with grammar (rereading it and putting , where I thought they should go) then reprinted (the fixed version) and turned it in. (That teacher could have just slapped a C or F but she didn't) :-) It was funny with writing styles I learned MLA that summer yet this teacher mention APA I was panicking OMG APA what's that?! She said MLA was fine (I always just used Google and this cheat database to make bibliographies or "Work Cited" pages as the teachers at my school called them) I never understood them. LOL!

Hi again.

Since you brought it up, I should also tell you: yes, have someone else check your grammar, structure, etc. Most professors are VERY picky about that--I'm glad that teacher you mentioned was understanding.

If there's a writing lab at your school maybe that would help. I am NOT trying to be critical here by any means--I was a TA a few times and there were some students who just had difficulty with it. The content of their papers was always great. However, the further along you get in college, the more points will be deducted for incorrect grammar and spelling.

I learned APA style first. I think I had to use MLA for something once and was completely confused! It's just a matter of what you get used to. In reality, the two are very similar.

If you can use the automatic function for "Works Cited" pages and your professors are okay with it, more power to you--I could never get those to work correctly.

Stay in touch! :D

Thanks Conundrum. I'll look into something about writing for right now at the AA level then perhaps that'll better prepare me for the Bachelor and onward. :-)
