These are the things that I'd rather happen, than me being cured of my autism.

Having my head chopped off
Getting raped
Getting a gun shot, in my body
Having a limb cut off

That's awesome; you rock! :D

I'd just been reading a crappy article about autistic kids (I have a 5-year-old with autism) and then came here and your post was the first one I stumbled on. It was nice to read a post by someone who doesn't see autism as a bad thing, after that stupid article I just read. I was chuckling with glee and my mum asked what was funny, and I read your post out to her. :D

Wow, I'd have all those things done just to be cured, even though it would make me a completely different person. Autism has CRIPPLED me and made much of my life miserable, and I would destroy it in a nanosecond if I had the ability. I hate autism, and I'm about as high on the spectrum as you can get. I also have type 1 diabetes, which I keep a very tight rein on, testing my blood sugar 12-15x a day and injecting insulin 7-10x a day, and I don't consider that disease much of a hindrance at all, and have no problem living with it. But autism sucks, and I hate, hate, hate it.

You'd rather be raped, beheaded, shot or lose a limb than not be autistic?

This all seems a bit melodramatic to me - I'd rather not have autism than have any of those happen. At least if I wasn't autistic I wouldn't find life so difficult in general - I'd be able to keep a job like other people and so forth . . . whereas if I was autistic and had no head/leg, well, that would make things even harder. :jocolor:

I can appreciate that having autism might be enjoyable in some senses, but for me it doesn't seem to have been an advantage so far. At all. Whilst it might mean I am not relentlessly normal and tedious like lots of people seem to be, it also means I have no money, get stressed about almost everything, and can't even go to shops without feeling exhausted and dizzy.

Just out of curiosity, in which ways do you benefit from autism?

I imagine it's because the OP would rather die or have something really horrible happen to him than not be the person he is.

You have to understand that when someone says, "I'd rather die than not be autistic," they are pretty much equating not being autistic with being replaced by someone who is not them, will never be them, and not existing themselves. It's like having someone else live your life, love your family, and wipe your existence away just by being there.

And that's a fate worse than death to many of us who treasure our identity and our individuality. Autism is too fundamental a component of a person's mind to be taken away without changing that person unrecognizably.

I would rather have a lobotomy than be cured. The results would be the same.

I hate to admit it but I think I would go for a cure if it did not effect my IQ or personality. I really do want to improve my memory, my clumsiness, my ability to touch or be touched by people, and not to have anxiety over mundane things like going aound people in public. I really want to be loved and to love someone back. I have not yet given up I guess. I have recieved nothing but pain from autism.

Thanks for minimizing violence, having been a victim of violence, getting beaten raped and then stabbed, I would gladly take the cure.

Hm.. I would rather attempt skateboarding and then fall over backwards and get hit in the face with the board. That has happened to me  I don't know how I'd be cured; whoever suggested a lobotomy was probably correct.

That.

If there was a cure that guaranteed me a GF and not just "anyone off the streets", then i'd take it. However, since even normal people have problems finding love, i remain sceptical about any miracle cure that makes my social life work.

That's right people - it isn't just about work and "being a productive member of society" as if we were some damn ant colony.

If it was a matter of being able to express myself socially and understand cues without altering my personality as a whole, then sure, I would be interested in a "cure."

But if it's a matter of changing the way that my brain works, I would rather be sticken blind, deaf and dumb. Although I suppose that would, on some level, change the way my brain works anyway, so not literally in this case.

Being cured of Autism would be death.

Everything about you would disappear, and you'd become a different person. I don't mean you would act a little different - I mean the YOU that you know as yourself would be gone - eradicated from the face of the Earth.

Most of the people you know would be afraid of the new person, because they'd behave like a complete stranger. You'd still run into problems and you'd have to learn all over again how to deal with them, because the old ways would no longer even be available to you, and you wouldn't have developed any new ones yet - you'd be starting over from scratch, like a newborn - you'd have a complete set of memories, but none of those would be of any use to you in knowing how to behave. Being 'cured' of your Autism would not automatically make you 'normal'. It would only make you more capable of 'learning' normal, but however many years old you are now - you'd be about that many years behind your peer group in learning social behaviors, so it wouldn't put you in a much better place.

I just don't understand why anyone who despises themselves and living their life so much keeps on doing it. I may hate the intolerance I have to endure from people too small to comprehend someone different from themselves, but I do not hate who I am - I'd rather be Autistic than stupid and I know lots of 'normal' people who are absolute morons.
