does it sound like I have Aspergers?
Hi,
I've been browsing this forum for a while and I've noticed that I'm experiencing many of the same problems that is associated with Asperger's. I'm gonna describe myself and I hope you guys could tell me what you think.
I have NO social skills. People seem to look uncomfortable around me and I haven't had a friend since elementary school. I'm also VERY good at math, but my writing and visualization skills are terrible. It takes me so painfully long to write a "B" essay, and I end up feeling extremely depressed afterwords. And that doesn't even compared to how bad my communication skills are... I can't string a sentence together without stuttering and slurring my words together. Some people think I'm a "genius", while others think I'm mentally ret*d. Also, I'm REALLY BAD at sports, and no matter how hard I try I don't get any better (always picked last in high school). And I get scared very easily. If someone sneaks up on me while I'm doing something I nearly have a heart attack. Plus I get really obsessive over things. Sometimes to the point where I don't get any sleep so I could continue doing my interests. The only differing trait between me and people with AS is that I'm very emotionally needy. I always want someone to talk to, and I get very lonely and depressed when no one is around me (which is the majority of the time).
Does it sound like I have AS? Should I see a diagnostician?
You could see a diagnostician and see what they say. People have various opinions about whether a diagnosis in adulthood does any good. I was evaluated as a child but not diagnosed with AS. My diagnosis was a continuation of what's been a lifelong issue...it started in childhood...with people wondering what it was that made me so difficult to manage, yet, they couldn't diagnose me with anything more than "hyperactivity" since I was interacting with people and wasn't too far behind. I was emotionally immature but that was about it. I was too interested in what I wanted to be interested in, didn't like doing what other people wanted to (was too into my own routines) and didn't like to sit still (they had me on Ritalin). If it wasn't for all that, I probably wouldn't be diagnosed today.
There are plenty of self help books for anyone who suspects they have an ASD. Many people read those instead of getting a diagnosis. There isn't a lot diagnosticians can do that isn't already in self help books, anyway, and often, the books are cheaper.
