I was watching Dr. Oz and out of 8 words I only remembered 3 OMG! (I also sucked doing this memory test in Psychology class aswell) So I was curious about memory issues with AS. I can remember stuff related to my special interests basic stuff no. Is anyone else like this?

I thought that one of the hallmarks of AS was an excellent rote memory. Maybe not in all cases? I think my 4.5 AS son may have a photographic memory. His special interest is car makes and models. You tell him one time what a car is, and he will remember it forever. He also remembers peoples faces and names that we met well over a year ago. Sometimes it is a bit frightening to me. I am an NT (as far as I know) but I have always had a great memory. My husband who has very AS traits, gets almost every single question on Jeopardy right! So maybe he inherited it from us!

Occasionally I have very good memory, sometimes it fails me completely. I've memorized a sizable text within no more than two minutes at one time, but once I believed an event which just occurred to have happened some time ago. I can't really compare my memory to anyone else directly, of course, but I think occasionally my memory is better than average.

When I was about 10 years old or so I would make people angry or otherwise fail to connect with them in some way and not remember later what I did to make them angry or cause them to be dismissive toward me. I also was susceptible to people accusing me of things I didn't do and couldn't remember not doing them, and I didn't develop an ability to prioritize what I should remember until my teen years.

If I don't find it interesting then it doesn't get recorded, simple as that.

Depend of what memory you are talking about. Aspies are generally good with long term memory but bad with short term memory.

I have a good memory for trivia but often forget important things. And I think it's true about long-term vs. short-term: I note two cases where my short-term memory completely fails me. When someone tells me to say hi to someone else for them, and when I worked in a restaurant and was doing something and they told me what to do next; I would finish the first task and then think I was finished, completely forgetting the thing I was asked to do next.

I can identify with that as well.

My rote memory tends to be facts and such that others don't care about. Where it fails me is with practically anything social like birthdays, names and often times conversations. Quite often I have a very detailed memory for events like eating with a group of people; I can state where everyone sat, what table and other items of not-so-much importance.

I do that alot. I can remember conceptual stuff easily. Specifics, such as names/dates are more touch and go. Depends on how interesting/recent it was.

What I really have alot of trouble remembering to DO things. I try to make myself do things the moment they occur to me, but I'm a bad procrastinator. That combined with the sheer forgetfullness... and my habit of remembering things when I'm not in a possition to do them, makes life interesting.

a hallmark? hardly. I think it goes both ways typically. for me, I have poor memory--especially for feelings and thoughts and words. I feel like I am constantly in a void. I do not remember conversations or how I felt or what I have been thinking about, or strings of numbers etc.

I can remember obscure trivial references but...

When my dad calls and asks me to bring his tools over when I visit him, what do I do? Well as soon as I get off the phone, I go and pull them out and get them ready to take later. When I get to his house the first thing I'm asked - so where's my tools? Um... sitting on the floor back home.... uh... I got them ready though...

This happened this afternoon.

I can't remember when I'm meant to do something, like if I'm meant to pick something up at a certain time, but I can remember things I've seen with good visual detail, even things that happened a long time ago.

I have a quasi-photographic memory.

I can remember insane amounts of stuff, but I have limited ability on the recall of it. In college and law school, I could study all I wanted and I'd never know if I KNEW the material. Sit down to take the test and more often than not, BAM, it'd start coming out of me. I still don't know how the trigger works on recall.

So, I'd likely not do well on that test either.

I can remember everything as long as I'm remotely interested. It doesn't have to be my special interest, per se. The things I remember very well are math-related, biology-related, or psychology-related. For these things, I could say that I have a photographic memory, if I actively engage with the material. I consider it one of my gifts. My long-term memory is excellent, but not my short-term memory. This may be your problem... not recalling things immediately, needing time to process them. I always do my work/studying as soon as possible after school and then revisit it several times to ensure that everything is stored in my mind.
