As an academic exercise, I'd like to hear people's answers to this. Just a few sentences to sum up what you think. I find this surprisingly hard to answer.

99% of the day-to-day conversations of NTs have little to no purpose at all. The other 1% might actually convey useful information.

I agree. I think most people talk just to fill up the silence.

To break an awkward silence or to just be polite?

Exactly, which I find stupid because I like the silence.

Different possible answers.

Entertainment.

In the world of business, conversation can be in the form of a 15 minute sales presentation designed to sign a new customer up for a product producing a commission for the salesperson because the product is useful and benefits the customer.

In the world of academia/the university, talking for hours is what professors do to earn their salaries. They are paid to talk. They are often paid to talk for fifty minutes, then be quiet.

They could deliver the content, in some cases, in five minutes or less but the rules are they must stretch it out to fifty minutes to get paid.

Conversations

Worthwhile
Waste of time

and so on.

If a person is skilled in conversation and can make persons from all walks of life feel comfortable, they can make a lot of money. Examples: Oprah Winfrey, Larry King, and so.

Conversations can establish moods. Example - Two words:

Vinegar vs Steak.

It would be cool if conversations were always about what is being discussed. It's hard to tell if the conversation is actually about the topic, or "let's show each other we care about one another by moving our lips and making sounds about something neither of us care about."

Oh, but all conversations do serve a purpose. You just have to know what to make of the information you learn. Because conversation between people always convey some sort of information or other, whether it seems directly interesting to you or not. It always tells you something about the person you're talking to. :)

I can tell you, from observing conversations between my peers, that they are not useful at all. Unless you care who had a fight with who, who dumped who, and what peoples' opinion on Big Brother is

Such things may give you useful information. I may tell you to steer well away from certain people, how to deal with a person who's experienced a difficult situation, it may give information about how not to rub a certain person the wrong way, it may tell you how to gain the confidence and trust of a person you would like to get to know better, and so on and so on. Information is many-layered, it is not only what it seems on the surface. :) It may sometimes seem like a riddle, but all kinds of information is useful in its own way. It's just part of the giant puzzle that a human and his/her personality is.
