Feeling like you can do anything
I've talked to a couple people that seem to be underachievers like me in their lives. They seem to be more or less happy with themselves, and I'd put myself on the bottom rung as far as happiness. We all agree that, if we put our mind to it, there's almost nothing we couldn't do. I've surmised that people that feel like they have no boundaries have very little potential. We lack focus, goals, drives, callings...PASSION. Of course the lack of motivation for me is because I don't feel like I can connect with anyone...that is my unmotivation. I almost wish that my dad knew a trade or owned a business that he could pass down to me since I feel like I have no direction.

I don't consider myself an over-achiever, and people who know me don't consider me an under-achiever, and I certainly can relate to not knowing what you want to do in life, but I really don't empathize with those who do have things in life they want to do, and just don't attempt them.
I am speaking of legal things of course, such as pursuing a profession or legal hobby.
This is very different from feeling like you can do anything. Of course most people can't do anything.
For example, if I decided I wanted to be a professional NBA player, I don't think that's going to work out. But if I decided I wanted to be a DJ, I suppose I'd find a way to get a setup and start looking for gigs to do.
I can relate somewhat to what the OP is saying. I have a desire to do something of value with the life I have left though what exactly that is never has just smacked me in the face. So, I have tried numerous times to just pick something that interests me and go with it. I will be self motivated to learn all about it as much I can by myself. But, I seem to get stuck when I have to rely on other people to get me beyond that point. It probably for me has to do with the difference between my high verbal iq and much lower performance iq. Plus, I just find it difficult to create relationships with people where they are willing to help me learn beyond what I can teach myself. I end not being as smart and quick when I am picking up new techniques or methods as I should be given my knowledge and background in my eyes and in those of my superiors. It is frustrating for me because I get so far along with it at a high level and just fall off a cliff and can't seem to proceed further without some form of understanding or assistance. It seems I am continuously struggling to stay afloat and begin to lose what motivation I had. I end up backing off and doing something that I can do without external help, but that leaves me feeling unsatisfied and unchallenged. Do other people struggle with this difference between their intellect and their ability to perform at that level?
Thanks for the links pgd btw.
Nothing in life is really worth being or doing.
Those who choose not to bred, often should. And many of those who often bred, should not.
Weakness can be a strength, and strength can be a weakness.
The mighty oak does not bend and will snap in a storm. The soft and pliant reed will lay down when the winds blows, then slowly rise to greet the sun after the tempest has past.
All the inherited direction you could ever need is already inside you, in your genes, your body, your mind. As an animal you already have the inbuilt desire to do anything that you want to do and recognise what those things are when you see them.
Being distracted by all the shiny lights and ideas of society may make that animal's sense of direction temporarily become clouded or disorientated, but it's always there. It has been since the genesis of life, the beginning of time, the first moment that something lurked out of the formless universe and said "I am".
Direction is just desire. Think of something you want, harness your will, and set out to get it in the general direction it's located. That's all anyone ever does.
