Did you often not buy a toy as a child due to it being misnamed or not looking like the source material?

Best example I can honestly think of is the Real Ghostbusters "Green Ghost" figure. I wanted Slimer, and I go to the store, and end up with Stay Puft because they had "Green Ghost", but not Slimer.

No, I didn't put the pieces together at the time and figure out they were one in the same; 'specially since Green Ghost looked angry, and Slimer wasn't angry on the show.

I'm sure there were other examples...like seeing a character with a certain look or something, and then not realizing that look/character wasn't a toy...and just buying something else.

Years later I hear so many folks giving such articulate descriptions from their childhood about what they thought about this or that toy, claiming they didn't like the look or lack of articulation.

I keep thinking "you were a &^%$ing kid! how would you have thought of any of this?! !! !! !!"

any thoughts?

Oh this is VERY common with kids.

Kids are intelligent when it comes to proper branding and apperances of toys.
Kids do not like knock off brands. I liked barbies, not cheap imitations. Same with my little ponies. It could be the sameish toy, but if it wasn't a my little pony it was lame.

This isn't exactly the same as your situation, as I didn't buy toys from TV shows. Sometimes I would buy pokemon of dragonball z toys that were knock offs and looked absolutely NOTHING like the characters simply to laugh and take the piss, like a vegeta with green skin.

So it very much affected it.

If the toy looked different to say what it did on wherever else i'd seen the character, I would laugh and say it was stupid but would probably buy it anyway because it was funny.

If I wanted slimer... some "green ghost" wouldn't cut it.
