Just curious if other Aspies 'get' stereograms. Stereograms are those pictures that look like one thing, but if you stare at them in the right way you're supposed to suddenly see something else, completely different than the image that's apparent when you first look. I've tried dozens of times and I never see the alternate image.

Here are some examples:

Not everyone can see stereograms.

Recall reading a How To (understand) Hyperactivity book (1981) about ADHD Inattentive by C. Thomas Wild who reported that the right medicine for him (Tirend, NoDoz) allowed him to temporarily see stereograms (not a cure). Apparently the medicine (Tirend, in particular) relaxed parts of his brainstem/the 12 pairs of cranial nerves (including vision nerves) enough so the stereogram went into temporary focus and he was able to see the stereogram as a whole, integrated image/picture.

I've spent hours in the past trying to see these. And never have
This time I did - sorta. I saw the "Horse" one from the second site, but I see it concave, and I think I should be seeing it "pop out" of the screen (judging by the details.

Why didn't anyone ever tell me before that it's not an image, it's an impression like you'd get from something like the toy shown in the following link:

Edit: I can't make out any of the green ones or black and white ones at all.

All I'm getting are some vague outlines of random shapes, no hidden image of any sort.

If your eyes are looking at the image the way mine are, all you'll get in a concave outline of the intended object - keep looking and you might see ridges, like you would a footprint in mud. But I think they're suppossed to pop out at you, not sink in. So I'm frustrated a bit...

The easiest ones for me so far have been the horse and the head, both from the second site.

The thing is, with the image you mentioned, the one titled "horse" I couldn't see a shape that resembled any part of a horse, just the outlines of some blob thing. Of course, maybe what I saw wasn't the right image.

That's all it is, is a blobby outline of a horse... nose facing east.
There's nothing really "picture" about them. it's like a colorless hologram.

I think you're probably just having the same problem as me - the 3-d effect is working in the wrong direction. Makes it hard to make out what most of them are.

--

Try "monosplash" - does the center of the image point at you, or away from you?
It's pointing AT me - but I think it's suppossed to be the other way around - like a drop in a puddle.

That's quite dissapointing, I was expecting an actual hidden image. :(

I see them instantly too. I've been doing them since I was four though, don;t know if that makes a difference, and my grandma made a 200 page book of them out of the ones in the newspaper because I loved them so much. :D

Instant for me as well. I split my vision constantly, ever since I was young. Sometimes if I'm deep in thought, its even involuntary. This technique is also a quick way to spot the differences in those side-by-side picture games.

i can't see them at all, but i often can't see optical illusions properly either. like, the illusion is lost on me.

interestingly, i CAN see irregularities in the stereogram things - even to the point where i can trace the outline of a shape, but it doesn't "pop out" and become 3-dimensional.

I used to love stereograms, back when the Magic Eye books were popular. It was always really easy for me to relax my eyes and see the hidden image. In fact, I can just relax my eyes like that at will. It's odd to think that others have trouble with that.

Gah- Okay I'm really not seeing these properly.
Do you guys actually see a 3-d image popping out of the screen?
Or do you see a "hollow spot" in the picture?

I love those things. I can have fun with them, for hours. :)

I think these work because the human brain will try to find patterns in visual objects. These stereograms have so many possible combinations, and our brains switch between the different "organizations" very rapidly because there is no stable combination or pattern. These images with pictures in them are made so that our brains will eventually organize them into a pattern that looks like a picture. If the human brain tries to organize something with multiple colors or that is moving, it gets confused and tries to organize it so fast that it "glitches" and affects other areas of the brain, sometimes profoundly. Click here to see what it feels like when your brain tries to organize something that is nearly impossible to organize (WARNING!).

Cross your eyes sufficiently, if you can. Not everyone can do it.
