Sounds in place of words
I don't know if this sounds really stupid but here goes...
Sometimes when I am stressed, under pressure or just having an aspie hard time I find that I cannot talk. The words are in my head but they just can't make their way to my mouth and out. All that comes out is small sounds. In my head that sound means everything I am wanting to say about how I feel or what is wrong etc but of course to the other person means absolutely nothing! Sometimes that fact frustrates me further and then I feel cross and frustrated with myself because it isn't the other persons fault and if I could just speak normally there'd be no issue
I've definitely heard people describe that before. I only have total speech failure when I'm sleep deprived. If you do a search on mutism you might find some old threads. I dunno why but the board is really slow/sparse lately.
Oh, and I think selective mutism is characterized as an anxiety disorder. What I've heard people describe sometimes sounds like that, and sometimes not. Seems like there's a lot of possible different speech oddities that happen for ASC people.
I think my son has this issue. This is what he tells me. (shortened version)
He has a brain and a mind, and when he wants to say something his brain and his mind work together to put a puzzle together. If he gets the puzzle together in time, then his words come out like normal. He also has good and bad germs and they battle all of the time. (I have learned that the bad germs is frustration) When the bad germs are winning they take over the brain and the mind and lock them up so they can't put the puzzle together. If he can't get the puzzle together the words don't come out right. He also tells me, when someone is rushing him it makes his puzzle pieces run away and he can't function or talk.
He does say that the puzzle goes together quickly when he's mad. He can't talk when he's frustrated, but when he's mad he has no problem articulating his thoughts.
Does this make sense to you?
My son with adhd used to say simular things about his temper. I think I understand what he's saying, he's getting stuck bringing two processes together into one which would be the actual sounds of speech ?
It's liek my vocal cords go on strike as even if I move my mouth nothing happens
I have the words in my head they can't come out, even if I try. I also sometimes have something in my head I want to say but it comes out wrong or sometimes I can't find the words to speak what I'm thinking and I think I sound stupid or unintelligent ![]()

I've had problems with speaking and understanding speech when I'm sleep deprived. I snapped at one of the people I worked with a few weeks ago because I became irritated and anxious when he tried to explain a different way to do a simple task, and I was sleep deprived and in a hurry to get something done. It turns out after all that his way was perfectly valid, and his explanation was probably good too, but I was having a "Shakespeare Moment". If I begin to have trouble understanding speech, then I may become anxious, which makes it even worse.
If you're not well versed in classical English vocabulary and you're attending a Shakespeare play, and you're having trouble understanding the perfectly spoken English and context isn't helping enough to fill in the gaps, then you're experiencing a "Shakespeare Moment".
I've been known to answer with an "Arrgh!" or a laugh or some other nonverbal sound, usually when I'm tired or for whatever reason the speech area of my brain has begun to wear out.
