Can someone please help me figure out what's up with the body language of the girl sitting on the inner frame? The one in the gray dress?

it's sort of an unnatral (srtificial) situation. So i wouldn't expect there to be any natural body language. In fact ti appears she goes the whole range of overexcited to distracted. I wouldn't consider it a good example of source for any specific body language.

Barring cultural factors I'm unaware of, I agree it's an attempt to look cute. The comments of 'kawaii!' suggest it's being received that way by Japanese people, too. More specifically, she's doing what children do when sitting down with nothing specific to do, but still feeling content and keeping themselves mentally occupied. I'd think the makers were aiming for 'young and carefree'. Like a child waiting for Father Christmas.

Obviously exagerated in my opinion. She is probably trying to look like a cute little girl, I've read that Japanese value youth a lot and like women when they seem childish. I do not think it was supposed to mean anything, but I know that I am sometimes expected to do gestures like that when I work with children.
