Hi, I'm wondering how to go about a diagnosis for AS in France. Anyone been diagnosed here? Or does anyone know anything about what they do here?

I live in France and I had my diagnostic of Asperger when I was a child. When I was 3, my pediatric said to my parents that I should see a child therapist. And they finally knew that I was Asperger when I was 5.
In France, it is difficult to have a diagnostic, especially for an adult, because there is not really an interest in autistic person.

I am French and currently live in England, have only been diagnosed with dyspraxia at 20. It's very difficult to get any kind of diagnosis here, especially when it comes to high functionning Autism or "rare" disorders (it seems that apart from dyslexia and ADHD, you can't be diagnosed with anything here because most people just assume you are lazy or weird or ret*d).

I have found this blog "http://la-vie-avec-asperger.skyrock.com/". This is about a girl who has been diagnosed when she was an adult, she explains everything.

It's more difficult to be diagnosed with anything else that bipolar or depression in France when you are an adult because everyone knows that people would have seen it earlier if you had a disorder  .

Good luck if you are French too (or just live in France) and trying to know "what is wrong with you". (I am not saying that disorders are a bad thing, just that it is the question most of us ask about ourselves).

Lucky you ! (I mean, not really but...) The teachers and pediatrics told my parents the same thing but when I saw a psychologist they said "let her grow up" no matter how obvious some of my problems (dyspraxia) were.

I presume you are talking about France.

Could you tell me a little more about it? How long did it take? How did you bring it up with your doctor? Did you know about AS before diagnosis?

Thanks

Oops... Yes, sorry, I edited my post because I had written that I lived in France which is not true right now.

You need to find a Centre de Ressource de l'Autisme near the city where you live to get a real diagnosis. You can also take a look at this website :
http://www.aspergeraide.com/index.php

I think they could help you (especially on the forum) because they know where to get a diagnosis. It seems that you'll have to take IQ tests and be interviewed more than once.

From what I've understood, they usually need to talk to the parents of the adult who asks for a diagnosis. I don't think you should talk to a GP or a psychologist about that, they are usually not qualified, just try to contact a CRA.

Ok, the question is answered. Thank you.

Also, do any of you go to or know of groups for Autism/Asperger's, in France?
