I sometimes like to imagine that some great disaster kills almost every living person on the face of the earth, and then I meet maybe one or two people and we become good friends as we try to survive together. That seems to me like one of the best ways to become emotionally close to someone, something which (for me at least) seems nearly impossible in the current scheme of things. Does anyone else have similar thoughts?

That would be kinda nice, but with my luck, I'd meet up with my MIL or SIL.
Kind of a downer, that.

Hmm... would that include Madagascar? Because I kinda like Madagascar. Other than that, it's a deal. And of course non-human animals will survive!

Yes. Yes I have. I'm not looking for the destruction of man, just the collapse of society, though.

I regularly have these thoughts too, I love the idea of starting back from scratch in a world where, although it's physically tougher, in other aspects is actually much simpler. I love anything kind of film/book based on dystopian societies too.

If you're going to collapse society, it would be tons safer to destroy a lot of mankind, because society is what provides a lot of checks and balances, imperfect as they may be.

If all the boundaries are going to fall by the wayside, most aspies would be among the first up against the wall, so it's better if there aren't too many other people remaining to put us up against the wall.

Yes! Starting from scratch! Exactly.

I just think that if the whole of society has broken down, and therefore all the rules and other nonsense that goes with it, then if there's just a few of you all together in a completely new and strange situation, then you build your own civilisation and sets of rules which suit all of you, as you no longer have to be shoe-horned into the "one-size-fit's-all" of a vast society like ours.

I wonder what kind of real-world scenario could result in the collapse of society. In science fiction there's stuff like a deadly flu strain developed by the CDC and released into the wild.

Post-apocalyptic fiction is my favorite. Ever read The Stand?

Got part way through the series, but I got bored with it. I've never been able to get excited about Stephen King's writing style. It must work for a lot of people though 'cause he sells a s**t load of books.

Have I ever? It's one of my favorite books! There's also a great new TV show now called The Walking Dead, I think all post-apocalyptic types should enjoy it.

I'd also miss the Internet. I'd miss rock n roll as well.
