Hi Brian. I've been here a little longer than you.
There is a "sticky thread" in the members only forum about someone who is happy that he has been diagnosed as AS. Try reading it. I was diagnosed about six weeks ago and find that the Dx combined with some reading about typical AS behaviors has made me more accepting of myself and some of my behaviors. My wife is more accepting too.
My physician adjusted my drugs because Paxil was not thought to be helpful for AS as well as depression. Effexor is thought to be better. So I think there are a couple of reasons to try for a Dx...
Avoid general practictioners. Search for a shrink with a lot of experience with PDD, ADHD, or Autism, even if he mostly treats kids. Read up on AS on the web and in your library...get yourself educated enough so that you can make intelligent informed decisions about your treatment and your life.
You say that you can do some things better than others...like what? It sounds like that might be a good place to concentrate in finding a job that pays what you are worth.
Good luck...
Keep writing, I am interested.
