D@mmit! I am NOT slow!

Why is it, in spite of the fact I hold a BA in Journalism, am currently in school to get a teacher's licensure and know more than most NTs in this hick-a$$ town, people at my job think I'm "slow"?

I know my CAPD and difficulty communicating in real time may make it harder for me to understand what people are saying in that noisy environment (it's a restaurant) and joining in conversations that sound like "wah wah wah waaah!" is a pain when I can't even decern the topic. But for god's sake! Give me some credit!

I would try to explain my AS but I get the feeling no matter how much I show how smart I am, any evidence that I'm dumb gets all the attention while the opposite gets ignored. I'm tired of feeling like I'm hanging by my fingernails from a 2000ft cliff. If I do one tiny little thing wrong, I lose big time; my family (my father disowned me because I wasn't a Jehovah's Witness), my job, my home...everything.

And it doesn't matter that if an NT makes the exact same mistake, it's looked over but when I do it, it's hell to pay. God, sometimes I wonder what of any help I'll be to the children I'll someday be teaching when I can't even cut it myself.

Today, my manager said "I dont like talking to people" or basically that it bothers me when people talk to me. I wanted to say 'No, well, partially true, I simply just dont know how or cant' but felt I'd be ignored...

I'm not slow, either. I'm confused. Being slow and being confused are two different things. I hate it when ignorant people call me slow.

If someone took an extra amount of time to react, I would consider them slow. That has NO reflection on ones intelligence though. A LOT of people do the stupid thing fast. Frankly, I PREFER the smarter thing to be done, even if it isn't as fast.

Don't explain it in terms of AS. I don't believe AS will make you slow here, and they wouldn't understand. In fact, if you could avoid the mention of AS entirely, it would be good. PROVE you can do the job, etc... Mention AS, and they will use bad experiences to give AS a bad reputation, and it will reflect on YOU also.

BTW I am, coincidently a little slow myself. I have a high IQ, know the subjects, etc.... I'm smart, and they know it. Maybe it is the fact that I have too much "mind talk" now. I never used to, and was faster. As for programming, etc...? I can't enter data as fast as some NTs. I never bothered to try to type fast. I maybe don't even start to program as fast(I think about things before I start), but there have been times where I have done in a few minutes what they thought would take days. I usually get the job done faster/better, and THAT is what matters. At my last job they were saying they wanted to hire about a dozen people to search data and they figured it would take about 3 weeks. I did it in less than 2 hours before they could even decide who to call. On one job everyone said something was impossible. They even had a 1 hour meeting saying that. I had it done in an hour.

well, if it makes you feel better, i scored 30 on the act and they got me to try counting change to see if i was ret*d while i was working at burger king (at first i thought they were considering putting me at the register instead of the grill...one could only hope)

It doesn't sound as if you're slow. It sounds as though you may have sensory overload. A job like that would definitely overload me.

To me people seem slow in other areas, like practically watching someone do they job and making it look like you been doing they job for a year or so, can solve how to use something myself fast, I don’t need a book to take over someone’s job I can just watch them & learn, stick me in front of a book that just has written writing in it with no practical work I tend to do badly, I know my learning type is video learning than book learning, but I do read books fast, I just have to read over it more than once, problem solving, speed in getting stuff organized & finished.

Over here under the Disability Act you can inform your boss of your disability and by law he can't sack you for that reason, and has to with in a degree change the structure of the work place or have a person come in to explain As to all the people you work with, if you have difficulties, i.e.: replace lights that buzz in your ears, mostly the gov will provide the company with the extra costs…

That’s the only time I would inform my boss if people are making me upset by attacking what I can’t help…

( DEA ) Over here you can inform your DEA of information about this stuff at a jobcentre, don't know other countries laws...

I'm slow I'll admit. But what people do faster than me is usually riddled with mistakes and flaws. I can get the job done CORRECTLY faster than most.

I've got a story that i tell when they treat me like i am stupid. Makes them look really bad.

Any work I do is slow and methodical but the end result is usually worth the wait. I think that it is a decent trade-off.

I prize accuracy over speed. If I hurry, I usually make mistakes.
