is looking for the rainbow amidst these grey skies, no pot of gold necessary.

My older sister wrote the above on Facebook.

I commented that I saw a rainbow Monday and took pictures with my new phone.

She then said: Cute, but I meant that a little more metaphorically than literally.

I don't quite get it. rainbow among grey skies I'd think perhaps she's upset/depressed and is looking for something positive/happy or am I looking at the comments wrong?? Please enlighten me. :-)

Yes, I think you got the basic meaning right. The pot of gold refers to the legendary treasure at the end of the rainbow, which would here correspond to the fullfillment of a wish or another very good thing happening.

I'd translate the whole message as: "Things are looking a little bleak at the moment and I'm not feeling at my emotional best, but I am hoping that something nice will come my way, even if it is not the great once-in-a-lifetime goodie that might or might not be somewhere out there waiting for me."

Yup. Aspie literal thinking can be humorous at times :)
