Is being too sensitive, being easily hurt by people's words, or being disappointed when people don't live up to your expectations, common in AS?

i feel that i lack empathy sometimes, but i am sensitive in the way, that if something gets me down or frustrated, i can be stuck in that frame of mind and find it difficult to make myself positive again.

WOW, I thought you were going to say something different. I consider myself to have AS.

I can't really be easily hurt by people's words, because they say so many STUPID things and may actually TRY to hurt me. HOW can I give them strength over me by allowing them to sap ME? OF COURSE I am disappointed when people don't live up to my expectations. Who ISN'T? MY expectations are even LOW, because it used to happen SO often!

I think it is a known association. I can't remember any references off the top of me head, though.

I think there are two extremes; one completely oversensitive to any criticism, the other really thick skinned and may insult people without realising it.

I can be both.

I can be both as well. It depends a lot on who I'm talking to. and I've actually overall been developing a thicker skin over the past few years.

Sometimes people mistake triggering me for hypersensitivity on my part.

I was known for this, but I consciously try not to be now. My self esteem is also not as rock bottom as it used to be, so I'm not as likely to take a gentle jest to heart. I had to learn the difference between affectionate teasing and malicious teasing.

I used to insult/offend people all the time. If someone is fat, skinny, bald, etc... you often can't say it in that way. Many here have said they are guilty of the same thing. I was only "oversensitive" to criticism if it wasn't true.
