Just wondering, how linked is spelling and reading and does it have anything to do with AS?

I was hyperlexic a bit as a kid, I had college level reading when I was in junior high. I could comprehend what I read. But, my spelling level was always 2-3 grades behind. I misspell a lot, I rely on spellchecker.

I just don't know what this is and if this is a sign my therapist or other mental health professional should know.

I mispell words like crazy. I probably just mispelled mispell!

But I have a very high level of reading ability, being able to read an entire page in a single glance.

I have dyscalculia, so I always attributed the mispelling to that.

I'm probably hyperlexic. I started reading at a very young age. I have horrible spelling. I've heard that many hyperlexic children have some form of ASD.

I had very good at spelling as a child but my spelling has become very poor.....at the same time I had poor reading comprehension as a child and really good reading comp now......I don't know how to explain this......

I was not hyperlexic........in fact it took me longer than average to learn how to read....however once I learned I became a very good reader and was in the most advanced "reading group" in my grade 3 class............

I consider myself to have been hyperlexic as a child, as I was a self-taught reader at age 4. (Interestingly, when I began teaching myself Spanish outside of school, I became hyperlexic in that language, as well.) I was a terrible speller in my early years, as I had no conception of phonics whatsoever. Having taught myself to read by way of memorization of words, I didn't understand how to sound out words. So, it was very common to see me spell something with the first and last letter being correct, but the middle letters being all jumbled. For example, it was common for me to spell "bird" as "brid." For some reason, though, by third grade, I had become an exemplary speller, and I was given advanced spelling and vocabulary words all through the rest of elementary school. I think why I became a good speller is that I eventually learned how to memorize how words were spelled.
