I consider myself to have been hyperlexic as a child, as I was a self-taught reader at age 4. (Interestingly, when I began teaching myself Spanish outside of school, I became hyperlexic in that language, as well.) I was a terrible speller in my early years, as I had no conception of phonics whatsoever. Having taught myself to read by way of memorization of words, I didn't understand how to sound out words. So, it was very common to see me spell something with the first and last letter being correct, but the middle letters being all jumbled. For example, it was common for me to spell "bird" as "brid." For some reason, though, by third grade, I had become an exemplary speller, and I was given advanced spelling and vocabulary words all through the rest of elementary school. I think why I became a good speller is that I eventually learned how to memorize how words were spelled.
