Ah. I thought your title referenced real sand in a real box!

My grandchildren and I used to have great times in one of those ...

I was being honest. I have in the past heard of "sandbox" as you had meant that, but I have never spent any time in one and that did not come to mind until I had actually read your post. If you wish, just say so and I will delete my own!

I play in the sandbox with my son all the time. We have a whole collection of monster trucks.

I'm not so much on sandbox games, too much open world building and I get bored and lose focus. I need something to explore. I do like open world games though for relaxing over the strict linear story games that I play more for the experience. I want to be able to walk off into the sunset and explore. See what's out there (and probably at some point shoot whatever I find and take it's stuff since hey, computer game, it's what we do).

Sandbox games (or as a kid I know calls them "Do-what-you-want-games") are awesome. The king of sandbox is undoubtedly the Grand Theft Auto series.

When you're feeling really angry, instead of breaking your hand on a wall, go on GTA, whack in a load of cheat codes to get a tank, jet, rocket launcher or whatever is available, and go on a killing spree.

If you don't like violence, then of course use your own method of relieving stress.

P.S. Traditional sandboxes are extinct; because all the kids are inside playing sandbox videogames.

If you want a sandbox MMORPG, you could try A Tale in the Desert. (atitd.org or something like that)
No combat, no currency, no NPCs. In-game marriage that allows full sharing of items and the ability to log in as your spouse.
Players are elected with the ability to perma-ban, so (nearly) all discipline is player driven.
No other game even comes close to its crafting.

Just Cause 2 is a lot of fun, running around killing people and blowing sh*t up for no reason. :D

Minecraft is awesome, but I haven't played in it a long time, even though I own the game.
