I was wondering if anyone is doing this.

I was always a history and archaeology fanatic so much so I was an archaeologist for the past 15 years. Recently due to health reasons (unrelated to Aspergers) I have had to leave the field and take an office job. I hate this job so every chance I have I am working on books about my interests. Some of them are rehashing and expanding papers I wrote in grad school... For instance I am about 70 pages into a book on the American west, 17 pages into a book about Werewolves, 40 into a book about the Victorian period, and a little over 60 on a novel I started writing at the first of the year. This writing is getting to be an obsession. So do most people with aspergers work around their interests?

it would not suprise me at all. Even non aspies do this, its called doing what you love. the special interest would have to be proffitable though.
Like collecting beer bottle caps wouldnt be very a very profitable buisiness if this whas your special interest. Most of the time though special interest seem to be about something that has a lot of theory behind it. Or things that you could spend your whole life improving on so that they you are never done.

So yeah having trouble getting fullfillment through other people caused me to look into making my special interest a big part of my life. So you always have it to fall back on no matter how other things go.

Luckily for me, one of my main interests is money itself, as well as the making of it. And business and the economy. Perfect for profit™.

Mine is the medical field. Mostly Genetics and Neurology. And I'm in pre-med school.

I'm not all the way into my career of teaching history & doing research yet, but I tutor and do workshops. I also greatly enjoy writing and I have two part time jobs writing for web pages. I also put a lot of my interest into guitar for the past few years and I give guitar lessons to a few students. So a fair share of the money I make, asides my crap full time job in a warehouse, is from stuff that interests me.

@ OP

I am the same way with history and archaeology.
ive always wanted to get into the field, but i have no idea as how to begin, what colleges offer the best classes.
I would love to work around my interests, but sadly there are no jobs where i live or opportunities to do so here.

but, could you give me some pointers on how to get into archaeology?

I try. I bought a pair of Nissan 240SX seats for like $75 at a junkyard and sold them for $100 that night. My hobby just isn't profitable enough. I make more money doing yardwork.

My advice for archaeology is to take a field school from a reputable university. Once you have done the field school you can begin doing field work.

Im doing it right now and just started up a business. Its not the interest itself that is hard, but the marketing of it can be tricky.Im kinda all over the place doing that now and it gets easier and easier and Im learning a lot.Still a challenge but all worth it.
