How do you feel about autism awareness month? Do you like it and try to use it to spread awareness, dislike it for some reason, not care either way or something else? Explain your answer.

I don't like "awareness months" in general.

I use it to spread more awareness about acceptance and education. My friend is the leader of Autism Rainbow Services and there's a lot of communication between autistics and their families and some are even politically motivated to make a difference.

It raises a little cash, so yeah, why not?

I don't like it, because all the Aurism Speaks commercials will be on tv and I'm against that orginization.

If you don't mind me asking, what does everyone have against Autism Speaks? I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't know anything about them.

No.

I don't like Autism Speaks so I think I've decided now that for me it's a no as it's too associated with them...besides I don't like awareness months...days are fine 'this is x issue/disability/disorder/cause, here's something about it/please help raise money for it' but I don't get why anything requires a whole month. And don't even get me started on Breast Cancer Awareness month.

By way of explanation... one of the reasons I don't like "awareness months", is that it's not always clear what "awareness" means. People use the term, a lot, but different people mean different things by it. And there's this unspoken rule that all "awareness" is a good thing, even when some of it very clearly isn't, but you're not supposed to ever say that or people will treat you like you eat puppies for breakfast.

Another reason I don't like it is because it often makes people feel like they don't have to do whatever they're doing, the rest of the year. And when it's actually something constructive, it irritates me that many people feel no obligation to do it outside of that one month/day/whatever.

That is cold.
So you don't want cancer cured either, huh?

I don't care if all the cure autism now groups come out from their little corner of Hell to frolick on the Earth waving banners about how autism is a terrible diseases to be cured. I take the opportunity for people to listen to me, because having a day or month does make people stop and listen for once. I do believe that awareness days are important because the public is really ignorant about most disorders and illnesses. Epilepsy services are still struggling and yesterday it was purple day to spread awareness about what epilepsy really is because there is a false stereotype about that as well. It's the same with autism.

Man this place sometimes...sickens me. And I'm the one made to look like a careless a** because I don't take Earth Hour seriously. Days for people with disorders and illnesses are far more serious and worth standing up for.

Make the decision yourself. Don't be swayed by these people.
