Why do people in these aspergers videos all look ret*d?

I have mild aspergers syndrome but I don't talk like Corky from the TV show life goes on. No offense to the people in those videos, but they seem to be more mentally ret*d than they have aspergers.

I dont talk like that at all, in fact I think I am very well spoken, But of course, I have no friends. But aspergers is not so much about how you speak, but more the lack of emotions in your tone, or sort of a "brainy but weird" type of dialect. Its little things like being unable to relate to people, but its different from that "ret*d" tone that mentally challenged people have.

I dont know if I'm explaining that right, but it comes across as something different than "ret*d". And these youtube vidoes of people with aspergers look more like people who are mentally challenged, than people who have aspergers syndrome.

Am I wrong on this? I have met people who have A.S. and while you can DEFINETELY TELL they have aspergers, you also DEFINETELY CAN TELL they are NOT ret*d. They appear more or less to be intelligent, but poor socially. There is a difference, a BIG difference.

Does anyone agree?

This is a really shallow post. You ever hear the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover?" Just because someone looks mentally challenged doesn't mean they are. Remember that.

I get what you mean. There are times I speak like a brain dead idiot, at least I feel like one. There is a huge range of autism, and a huge range of how those on it can verbalize. Some have a wide vocabulary and others can't speak at all.

Some can express themselves some what with facial reactions, others can't even look at a person or even the same spot while talking.

I too have mild AS and people have a hard time believing I have anything wrong with me when they first meet me. People expect to see and hear a more Rain Man type thing.

I'm not sure what videos you are talking about. Most individuals with AS, myself included, have normal speech patterns and tend to be rather good with words.

Most of the individuals I know with unusual speech patterns actually have MFA/HFA

Well I hope these people that speak like they are mentally challenged have more friends than the OP.

I speak slowly, with a monotone/Cockney accent like my hero and I'm sure that I have more friends.

I've also noticed that the OP used the R-word. Is that the only word in the English language that he knows?

Honestly?

"Looking ret*d" and "looking geeky" often involve the same exact visual cues because both stereotypes are partially derived from autistic people. It's all about expectation. When I visited a university famed for its geek population, I saw all kinds of behavior and appearances that were treated totally differently than people in special ed, but only because of the context, not because of any observable difference between the people. Which is why I think context and expectation can play more a role in "passing for normal" than any actual trait of the human being involved, does.

That used to be one of my favorite television programs. How did you get the impression that Corky had Asperger's? He has Down Syndrome.

I met 3 people with AS who appeared ecentric and weird maybe not so much mentally ret*d, actaully one guy with AS was VERY weird because he had AS verging on classic autisim and was very loud and noisy because he did a lot of theatre and spoke in a 1950's radio presenter style voice. I have met another guy with AS who is normal (he used to very odd when younger) he does have weird tendancies but really he just appears like any normal teenage boy. another guy with AS i knew in college behaved completely normally like an NT but he did have his moments and another guy at college who kept getting rejected by social groups even though he appeared quite normal but his social skills were nerdy and he appeared like a nerd as well. one AS guy who was weird and violent and another guy with AS at college was not ret*d but he was a bit weird and nerdy and got rejected by friendship groups.

look at this documentary about aspergers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSxgCguPEaM

they don't appear mentally ret*d do they? Well the guy with AS maybe slightly but more guircky than mentally ret*d.

I've seen a few YT videos made by people with AS, and some of them did have an *affect* to their voice., just sort of a thing you hear around artists or theater types, they didn't sound mentally challenged. I sort of do,too, but it's not that weird and it's not like I can't control it. People just call me animated.

I do know what you mean, though. The only person I had ever seen or heard speak with AS for awhile was the teenage boy on True life: I Have Autism, and he definitely did seem mentally ret*d. I don't think it's true of most people with AS. I get the impression that many talk fast. I'm sort of this way, talked VERY fast as a kid and learned to slow down because people couldn't understand me and it wasn't normal.

I don't talk like Corky, I sound like Mick Avory - my Cockney hero.

I assume he meant mental retardation. That is what ret*d is.
