What I don't understand is the whole "Cure NT's" and the belief of aspies being superior to NT's. While there are many great members on this cite, I really don't see why there is a need to put down NT's. There are many members who want to form friendships with those who are not on the spectrum, so the whole "I hate NT's, where smarter than them" does not seem to help to anyone as far as I'm concerned. I'm a very strong believer that people on the spectrum would could accomplish great things in science and technology and whatnot, but not everyone is going to be rich and famous. Most of us are just going to be ordinary folks. I really hate the whole mentality of thinking that your better than someone else, for whatever reason, whether money, clothes, college education, anything. Does not help anyone, really.

My instinct tells me that amongst many these could be two reasons for this "elitist" thinking amongst some Aspies (their views may be more pronounced and grating, but are they really representing the view of the majority?):

personal experience of repeated insult or hurt by individuals or groups (f.ex. cliques), which leads to generalisation in some people and therefore to the sentencing of a whole oh-so-homogenous group " THE NTs" as instinct-led pack animals, who for their own disadvantage have not chosen to elect the victim as their Alpha leader. ( applied to me during grammar school and the work place intermittently, ).

parents of Aspie children might for understandable reasons fall into the trap of praising instead of encouraging, confusing the need to reassure a child, who is differently wired of his/her equal value and sometimes high potential, with encouraging him/her for his/her sustained efforts, therefore unknowingly breeding within the child a sense of superiority founded merely on his/her difference in wiring, hereby losing to point out that different does not equal better, different just means .... different. They might be even doing so without the knowledge of autism, it is enough to keep on pointing out that "we" don't do things like this and "we" rationalize, plan and do things our way. ( again, personal experience speaking ).

Elitism in general is a externalization of an inferiority complex. It is an amplification of certain self perceived positive attributes as cover for an underlying pervasive sense of insecurity.

I used to feel superior to others...then I started to relax, and it all went away.

I don't feel that anybody should be cured aganst their will of anything, though the option should be there for people who want to be cured of something. This elitism is rediculous on both sides of the coin - NTs wanting to cure aspies and us wanting to cure them.

I think Aspies are the ones who need to be cured. Aspies are only a very small percent of the world. I believe Aspies are the weaker species rite now & if you believe in Darwin's theory of evolution; you know the stronger species survive & the weaker one dies off. I think NTs are generally more capable of dealing with life in this world than us Aspies usually are. I think some of this Aspie elitism is related to Aspies being the weaker species. Some of us had major problems getting along with NTs because of our differences & those problems have caused some to distrust, fear & even hate & despite NTs

Aspies and NTs are both homo sapiens sapiens. Natural variations within the same species.

Your explanation of evolution is way off, too.

I don't think it is an Aspie elitism per se. For the MOST PART, I think it is a "we don't need to be cured either" kind of backlash. I wouldn't wish my life on anyone...on the other hand, some NTs are a bit insensitive when it comes to us, thinking that we need to be cured as well as often ignoring us as well.

In terms of species, we're all human, NT or Aspie. There are aspies who are living just fine and there are NT's who are barely getting by for whatever reason (not neccessarily because of social skills). Don't lump everyone together.

I wonder at what point "cure NTs" went from being harmless satire to being something elitists actually believed. I can remember when it was harmless satire, I still know a few places where it still is. But now there are a lot of people who actually believe in autistic superiority, and I don't even know how to fathom that.

Aspies are are not elitist, only a elitist would think that, we simply mimic and reflect predatory NT
behaviour, otherwise known as bullying. :)

While I can't speak for others, the only problem I have with NTs is that I just don't get them, and they don't get me. Sure there are exceptions, but in general I can be annoyed with the misunderstandings. It's not that I think I'm superior, it's just that there is a frustration when we try to understand each other.

Also, it's hard even for the best of us not to feel a little bit of disinclination when we've been bullied by NTs every day. That sort of thing can be hard to dismiss, even after many years. I still have a lingering distrust of NTs, as do many others here.
