With some people having sensitivity to light and sound, I was wondering if any of you wear sunglasses a lot (not because its sunny outside) because bright lights other you or earphones/or earplugs to cancel out the noise. What do you do?

Hmm, aspie with headphones and sunglasses=cool aspie 8)

Ok, now on serious note. What was your experience when dealing with sensory issues?

I always wear sunglasses outside. Usually even when it is cloudy. I keep them on right up until dusk. I also use ear plugs as well sometimes. I work at a theatre/auditorium where there are concerts, dances, plays, etc. If the concert or whatever is too loud for me, I use ear plugs.

I don't go outside without sunglasses on, even if it's cloudy out. They have to be dark ones too.
My sensory issues are typical. Sensitive to light and sound and the feel of clothing... and, most irritatingly, temperature. If I were prone to meltdowns, I might have had one today when my mom confirmed that she was going to leave the sliding door wide open today despite the fact that it was almost 90 degrees outside. Apparently the air indoors, while cooler, is too "stale and polluted"... whatever that means. I think my mom gets cooties from it.

I wear active noise-cancelling headphones when playing poker. I don't listen to music or anything on them, I just use them to block out some of the background slot machine noise and they help me concentrate.

I always wear sunglasses too. I've even been known to wear them inside the house sometimes. I don't use ear plugs because any of the ones I've tried have made my ears sore, but I generally do a decent job of avoiding noise. Do headphones make a difference if you're not playing music? Because the music just adds to the overload. I tried listening to music to drown out people talking when I had to work in an office once, and it only made things worse.

Just headphones will muffle noise a little bit

Headphones with active noise cancellation will block out some background noises (I describe it as just turning down the volume of everything around you)

Active noise cancellation headphones can range in price from $30 ish (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PE5MPS the ones I use) to hundreds of dollars.

You could also listen to a white noise mp3 with regular headphones to accomplish something similar.

I have been known to wear sunglasses day and night....when I HAVE sunglasses. My sunglasses only last maybe a month before one of my siblings breaks them. Usually they are broken within 2 weeks. It's annoying as sh*t.

I have earbuds in most of the time. Noise to drown out the noise. But, in my opinion, it is good noise. That'll be over soon as well since I can't keep the children out of my damn room. One of the little ones is ALWAYS finding my mp3player and taking it. Then I have to search the house. It's pretty broken now. Held together with tape.

I had noise canceling headphones. Siblings broke them. URG.

I am very sensitive to light. Not just bright light. Pulsing or flashing lights (that should not be flashing...like what fluorescent lights do)...lights that are dying, too much glare, etc all give me migraines. And...when overhead lights are pulsing, but shouldn't be, it makes me feel weird. It is difficult for me to describe. It makes me really uncomfortable. Almost makes me want to throw up. It is weird because when I say something about them, no one else sees it. They tell me that the lights aren't doing anything.

Oddly enough, I LOVE strobe lights. That is like...sensory heaven to me as far as light is concerned.

I have always been sensitive to loud noises. High pitched noises are the worst. I freak out when I hear them. It's embarrassing. I get very angry and rant/yell about them. Threaten whoever is making the noise (like...a person using a mosquito ringtone). Tell them that I will shove their phone into...orifices.

I wear earplugs on buses and trains and whenever it gets too noisy. I also have a noise cancellation headset but it doesn't wrok too well. Sometimes I wear earplugs and then put the headset over them. This I do at home when I'm studying and there's noise in the house or outside............I don't bring my headset out with me. This actually works really well. I don't have visual sensitivity and don't wear sunglasses.

I really almost always need sunglasses outside. White light really bothers me and can trigger migraines. Cloudy overcast days even, or when its really bright due to tons of snow everywhere. Even fluorescent lighting can get to me, but I'm not willing to wear my sunglasses indoors 8)

I carry my iPod and earbuds everywhere with me for this reason. When I worked in an office, they were on almost all day. I wear them now in the library, or when alone at the mall or grocery store - any time there's a lot of noise. I get stressed out trying to filter/hear everything at once. Sometimes I think I'd rather be deaf.

As for light, I get headaches from bright light, so I keep sunglasses nearby, but only for outside. I usually keep the blinds at least half-way closed so the house isn't too bright.

I like to wear sunglasses and headphones so I guess I must be cool!

I am not sensitive to music in my ears but I am to certain other sounds or background noise in a crowded room or city centre. In regards to light, when I am at home I just keep the curtains closed.

Most of my issues are with sound. I've used music - at ear splittingly loud volumes - to cancel out car noise, on trains, etc... And thanks to that bit of long standing ignorance, I now have tinnitus as well. At home I opt for the good old fashion hands over the ears. Without knowing that I had sound sensitivities, I never considered earplugs before. After all, I was just being a baby and a drama queen. Wondering how many years of constant agitation I could have avoided with that one little piece of knowledge.

I were sunglasses outside when the light is out because the lights from anything! the sun or the cars street lights or so on bug me they hurt my eyes and give me headakes because the light gives of this big long line in my eyes its odd.

Sensery issues?
i hate them so bad:

water: I hate it when i get out of the shower or use sope theres this dry feeling on my skin.
Sope: I hate it because like the water it leves a dry feeling and the water and sope togather makes it even worse. makes me wish it would just go away but it cant.

Sweaters: The ones that have a weird feeling inside them makes it feel ichey and rubs on my skin and makes me need to take it of as fast as i can. so i never were sweat shirts.
Jeans: I hate them because there tight and tichey and i got to do the same with them take them of ! i only like silk or shorts but the shorts cant be jean like.

When someone hugs me theres this weird feeling on my skin i cant exsplane i think its the force they use to them its light to me its light but still idk weird feeling! and its just leve me along and i get angrey and pull away from them or just say dont.

I always wear sunglasses outside and in most lit businesses (especially those that use fluorescent lights).

Sometimes my sensitivities are such I end up wearing them in my own dimly lit bedroom.
