I happen to think they are the greatest invention on earth! Not only do they store all your music etc but they actually stop people from talking to you and invading your space.

The route from my old job to my bus stop home used to involve me walking through our city centre and I kept being stopped by people trying to sell me stuff, sign me up to give to chartiy etc, which used to stress me out. One night I notice the a guy waling in front of me, who was listening to his Ipod as he walked, didn't get stopped once. So I tired the same thing and it worked! :D

It also stops people on the bus trying to start a conversation with you, shop assistents chating to you etc. I also discovered, that when I ran my battery flat, just having the ear phones in stopped people approaching me! :D

Thank you apple.

Not fond of Apple. I have a beat up Sony Walkman mp3 player. Had it for 2 years. It's seen hell. I am thinking of investing in an mp3 player from Creative Labs. They look pretty sweet. Question: Why is this topic in General Autism Discussion? Isn't this, like, tech?

And yeah, mp3 players make great conversation deterrents. =]

yes :D yes a hundred times

although when you take them off you might get asked what you were listening to, and if i say Travis they might say "oh they still bring out music? i remember why does it always rain on me" and it makes me facepalm.
Not many things upset me more then when someone says something like that about my beloved Travis.

MP3 players are great for avoiding having to talk to people and avoiding having people invading your space - in the city they help me avoid those charity people (although I'm waiting for the day when one of them physically tries to stop me...), and they're useful on the metro to avoid random nut-jobs talking to me and to drown out the sound of kids or charvers...

BUT...iPods - NO! Apple are in fact evil.
Granted I use an iPod myself at the moment, but that's only due to necessity after accidently knocking the Creative MP3 player I got for Christmas into a glass of Coke; doh!

Ouch. That inhales quite deeply.

I have to confess that a few years back I even sat through an entire family meal with my ear phones in! I told them I was listening to an audio book for college but didn't even have it switch on.

I just wanted to avoid talking to my grandfather, whom I didn't like.

I bought one years ago and afterwards very rarely used it. I haven't a clue where it is now, more to the point.

I agree, it's a life saver for me too and often helps me avoid overload or even a meltdown :)

I use my Android phone, but yes, I love having an MP3 player.

Usually keeps me sane...avoiding overload, that sort of thing.

People also don't try to talk to me when I have it on, so if I'm not in the mood to try interacting, it's really nice to have it then.

I have to get new headphones, though...the ones I have now are kind of low-quality.

I do this most meals to avoid talking to my family, not because I dislike them but because I exhaust easilly from socialising and I must pick my times to socialise carefully, I can't just socialise when I want to, I need to plan ahead.

I know what you mean. I don't tend to eat with my family normally, I usually take a try of food into another room so I can eat in peace.

Creative Labs makes the best product in my opinion. Very user friendly, etc. I've had 7 over the years and wouldn't have traded them for anything else, and I've used lots of techie stuff. My last one got stolen :( so I guess I'm not the only one who likes them LOL. Now I use my Android phone, but will definitely invest in another Creative player at some point.

Well to be fair, I have had 4 different types. My iPod has latest the longest. It's true. My Samsung broke after a year and a half. My other 2 were alright, but they could only hold like 20 songs or something.
