I do this thing that I've always thought was a strange habit or tick kind of thing. I became aware at quite a young age that it was not considered 'normal'. I've never stopped doing it though - but It now only happens when I believe myself to be alone. I have NO idea why I do it. It almost seems like my body or brain needs me to do it!! !

I'm wondering if it could be Aspie related.

When I'm alone and my mind is locked onto a subject - I clench my hands and jaw very tightly. Often I'm making a strange sound (a tongue rolling rrrrrrrrr kind of sound). I'm very tensed up when I'm doing this and sometimes it feels like I may make my head explode.

I've never talked about this before. I think it's really wierd - I don't understand why I do it.

Any ideas anyone? Am I just loopy? =[

I sometimes find myself doing something like that with a clenched jaw, and I think that has something to do with some overall angst as well as some lifetime frustration and a lot of adrenaline being available ... kind of like an engine all revved up without knowing what to actually engage and do.

You're not loopy. It sounds like it could be Aspie related. It depends why you use it really.

Do you use it to help you concentrate on your thinking? I have lots of things that I do when I'm trying to concentrate. Things that block everything else.

Don't worry about being weird - it's normal :D

As an expirament -get a stationary excercise bike.
When you get the urge to do that just get on the bike and channel that adrenaline into pedaling as fast/or far as you can.

See what happens.
Within a few weeks:

Either the habit will go away, or you might build up your cardiovascular fitness up to olympic proportions.

Thank you for the advice - the amount this habit/compulsion occurs - I would be extremely fit indeed!!

To be honest though I think a punch ball and boxing gloves would be more apt. Maybe I'll give that a go. Maybe I'll become a knock-out =]

I have REALLY bad TMJ, and clench all over when I'm stressed. Since I was a kid I've also had a habit of doing something that makes a clicking sound on the insides of my ears. It's strange and hard to describe; I know that first started because I have narrow ear canals and often feel like my ears need to pop, but I still often do it when I don't need to.

Tics and habit behaviours are quite common in people on the spectrum. I understand how annoying a tic can be. I've got over 100 (yes diagnosed Tourettes!) and it drives me doo-lally! Have you noticed a time/place when it gets worse or is it pretty consistent? Also, do you ever drink caffeine because that can (I can guarantee this!) make a tic much worse. I'm curious now :)

I have about 4 to 5 cuppa's a day - sometimes tea - sometimes coffee. However - I've done this 'thing' - whatever the hell it is - since childhood when I didn't drink either tea or coffee so I don't think there's a link to be honest.
