I hear some Aspies don't like any kind of travel due to sensory overload while others just wish they had the means to 'see more of the world'. I personally lay somewhere in the middle; I'd like to travel more than I have but would need to have all the logistics planned and would need to stay in a comfortable hotel, etc. I do not due well with spontaneity or "roughing it". If money were NOT an issue which of the following places would you choose on a vacation (Let's say you won a voucher for 7 days of travel with a limit of $10,000 in expenses)? You cannot sell this voucher for cash so you must use it or give it away for free. What would you do?

Please try to choose among the options below but if none appeal to you and you still want to travel, specify what your ideal vacation would be below:

A picturesque castle-style hotel overlooking a garden sounds lovely. I'd especially like to go if it were somewhere in the UK.

[X] A cottage in a remote mountain small town by the lake that most tourists don't know about, relaxing and taking it easy...

... preferably in or near Crolly, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland.

I can't really decide. Relaxing at a cottage in the mountains by a lake sounds like something I'd sign up for, but I would also love to explore Yellowstone, and I wouldn't mind going to Hawaii either. Alaska might be nice, but it would have to be in the summer, it gets too cold up there. If I could, the best vacation would be to leave Earth entirely and go explore the galaxy in my own personal Millennium Falcon, but obviously that's not going to happen (yet). It would be so much fun living 2,000 years in the future.

I find a couple of the above options appealing.

Right about now, I'd take any of 'em! (Except NYC -- I want to get away!) All good options -- you could be a travel agent :D -- but I chose Alaska. I am one Aspie with no qualms about traveling -- with the exception of business travel, which I find really anxiety-laden.

Man, most of those sound really nice right now. I have always wanted to tour Europe so I chose Italy/Greece.

I am so with you on that one- I'd love to travel more if I could afford it. The only issue is that I'd need to stay in a place with comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, and have things planned in advance. I do not do well with "winging it" or roughing it. I tried camping once and I hated it. I do okay sharing a hotel room w/ one other person I know really well. I think I'd enjoy all of the above options as long as I had the comforts. I created this poll cuz I saw a few postings from Aspies who hated traveling due to the sensory overload and change in routine. I wanted to see if other aspies thought like that or were more like me in their desire to see more of the world......but on their terms....

I also chose Alaska as my top pick just cuz it would be different and I love nature/wildlife. I have been to NYC and think you're very lucky to live in such an amazing place.

Hm. I'm not sure. If I could make the choice I suspect it would be a lengthy trip around South East Asia and Australia/New Zealand with a very fit body, tons of independence and social skills and loads of money. Oh, and a good m43 camera with a powerful laptop to share my photos.

Knowing me, I'd probably like to go to Disney World. Never been before, so that works for me. And I like nice comfy hotel rooms to come back to when I am tired for the day. Screaming kids really aren't my forte, but I still like amusement park type spots. How very un-Aspie of me, perhaps! Hehe. Oh, but a nice big science museum along the way would be fun.

As for some of the other options... I do like nature, but I like it more from an aesthetic standpoint. As in, it's beautiful and I would love to paint/draw if I had a chance. When it comes to me actually having to weather the elements, though, I'm a wimp. I'm not a big fan of hiking in the woods and I still have nightmares about the camping trip my dad and I went on. Mosquitos, bad food, and rain... an all around bad experience. I also recall this one summer camp I went off to, which was also equally as traumatizing. I lost a lot of weight while I was gone.

Anyhow, though, fun ideas! If I think of any cool vacation spots that haven't yet been mentioned, I'll post again. :)

//edit: I should probably add that I currently live in NYC and that I also lived in Tokyo for a year. I don't need to vacation in either of those spots.

I'd go to Japan. I'd hate how crowded it is, but there are a couple reasons:

1. I've learned some of the language, and I'm interested in becoming fluent
2. Japan has a very interesting history and culture

For these same reasons, I'd also want to visit China, especially go and see some of the sites of the major battles of the Warring States Period and the Three Kingdoms Period, eat some real Chinese food (though I'd pass on the yak bladder), and ABSOLUTELY take a trip up to the Wudang Mountains!

Going to Japan, I probably wouldn't visit battlefields, but I would go to important places in Shintoism and eat real Japanese food.

Yeah, I love to travel, and I think I've hit all of your options except Japan, Alaska, and Antarctica(!) (Prolly won't get to that last one for a while!) Yes, the sensory overload and interruption of routine can be a lot to handle, especially if there are time differences involved. (I don't do well when my sleep schedule is interrupted.) You'll get to all of these places if you really want to go...

Fantastic! Alaska it is then. Get packed! You'd like any of the National Parks, I'd bet. I once drove from Vancouver to Phoenix and went to every National Park on the way that I could. It took me a month and I ended up driving over 3000 miles! But, I think I saw 8 or 10 parks on that trip -- including Yellowstone.

Talk about sensory overload(!) And being really tiring(! !!) Actually, living here is not as much fun as visiting. It's actually a lot like living anywhere else -- only everything is 10 times the hassle! But, if you're ever back, let me know. :D

Anywhere warm, with things that I find exciting like amusement park rides, water slides and natural landmarks.

Actually; When I was staying in NYC, I went off season in late January and found it only to be moderately crowded and quite tolerable. I was amazed at how well the public transportation works there since I don't really like driving. I took the subway all over the city, saw the remains of the WTC, Manhattan, Wall Street, took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, saw Bronx Zoo, enjoyed the Museum of Natural Season, hung out in central park and took a horse carriage ride in the snow (I live in a climate that never gets snow so that was a bonus!), I didn't have to pay for a hotel because I was staying at the home of one of our old family friends (empty nester couple who had lots of extra rooms) who lived on Long Island but I took the train into NYC every day.

I think if my current career training works out (I'm taking paralegal training with the intention to work in a nonprofit firm where quirky people are tolerated and embraced), I may even look for a job in NYC. I am kinda tired of CA.

I like solitary walks on beautiful paved trails but also have a difficult time on strenuous hikes that require physical exersion. I tried camping once and HATED IT (It might be due to my aspie-ness but I also know NT people who hate roughing it). I think I would like Yellowstone if the cabin had heat, electricity, running water, etc so I could take a nice warm bath and cool down or warm up. I would take strolls rather than adventurous hikes.

I have been to both Disneyland and Disney World, both off season though- I enjoy the rides and themes but found it too crowded even during the "least time of the year." I hate to imagine how crowded would be like during peak season! I also took a side trip to the Everglades which I enjoyed very much.

I would like to take train tour of Denali National Park in Alaska someday if I have enough money. You spend the day on luxury train, sightseeing the beautiful wildlife, maybe getting off at stops to take picture, and then stay in a nice 3 or 4 star hotel at night.
